Firstly because Labour will now be so bisy with a leadership contest that he doesn't have to engage with the significant responses to the segregationist and genocidal nature of the code. So he fobs off the decision on trans existence to Burnham (if he wins) because of the unexpectedly strong support for the EDM calling on the government to disprove it.
But if it is disproved, the Genocidal Gender Critical Terrorist Movement that has it's claws deep inside this modern right wing labour party will tear into him from within and without, using all the media and fundamentalist christian money they have access to to undermine his leadership and the labour vote - driving them to, they hope, Reform
Never forget, the hatred they feel towards our continued existence is irrational and extreme - destroying everything around them, undermining their own long term future is a frequent casualty of their mania.
And of course if it approved - if he approves the genocidal code, their will be a continuing swing away from Labour from the LGBTQIA+ and 16-24 vote - with the constant challenge to him from the lefties who will slow down (or reverse) any possible swing to Labour from the Greens.
Either way, that date looks like Starmer's poison-pill parting gift to Burnham because he really really fucking hates him, and would do anything to hurt him, regardless of the ramifications

When this sucks all the balls...

This is my ongoing, day to day reality.
It sometimes makes it very hard to get shit done. Like ANYTHING done.
According to how equality is supposed to work now - since the SC ruling - if we recognise equal value to all protected characteristics but trans people are 'birth sex', then trans people should *only* be strip-searched by officers who also have the same sex as them *and also* the protected category of gender reassignment.
Anything else is less favourable treatment and outcome because of the possession of that protected characteristic.
To be searched by someone who is not gender reassignment is to be treated worse than someone who doesn't have it being searched by someone without it, because the protected characteristic, like that of pregnancy or race, recognises that it means to have a worse outcome in life. Equality law is supposed to *mitigate* that, not exacerbate it.
There should be a 'like for likeness' symmetry. Or, we could call it 'separate but equal' if you like 😉
But what the 'gender criticals' really want is NOT equality at all, and not even a two-tier equality system like separate but equal.
What they want is the institutionalised, systematised abuse, hatred of trans people: at every encounter, in every way, in all places, at every moment of their lives.
until they just.... 'go away'...
Either through the 'choice' of never transitioning, through suicide because of the utter pain and anguish of being denied the chance to live a life true to oneself, or slowly crushed by the hate you must endure until it is 'all too much' or because they are being raped and murdered when the dude realises she's trans.

I finally wrote to my MP about the EHRC code, and the Early Day Motion. Really hoping she takes my points on board

I am writing as one of your constituents to express my deep concern with the proposed EHRC code, recently submitted to parliament, and my disappointment that you have not yet signed to support the Early Day Motion 240 challenging its implementation

As you are no doubt aware, a number of charities, Human Rights groups, trade unions, and in particular disability groups, feminist, and LGBT groups have openly expressed their dismay at the draft code recently submitted to Parliament. They have all argued that it is confusing, contradictory, opaque to the point of what appears to be deliberate obfuscation, and that it repeatedly attempts to pit the current rights of women as in competition with the rights of trans people

Even more disturbingly, it strongly directs those interpreting the Act and using the code to treat the category of sex, and the category of gender reassignment, as a hierarchy of rights - with that of Sex standing above that of Gender Reassignment in all cases

This is a dangerous place for the country to be. Any attempt to enshrine in guidance, or law, a hierarchy of rights, as Mary Stephenson has encouraged with her re-interpretation of the Supreme Court's ruling in 2025, is to de facto establish a nationwide system of state-mandated inequality

As an academic of politics and sociology, with many years experience both teaching and studying on such matters, I can say with certainty that the introduction of two-tier laws, rules and regulations, that privilege one person's equality over another's such as this sets out, are the core foundations of all Apartheid and segregationist states that this country has rightly decried whenever they appear

Further, that the establishment of a hierarchy of rights inevitably results in an enlargement of that hierarchy. Once one group is rendered legally less than, this becomes the tipping point that facilitates and leads to more (small and politically weak and vulnerable) groups being rendered legally secondary

Now that Labour MP Sarah Owens - the chair of your government's own Women and Equalities Committee, assigned to work for the best interests of women's equality - has also signed this motion, judging in her expert opinion, and following on from Mary Stephenson's most recent attempt to defend the code earlier this week, that the guidance submitted is inadequate for the purpose of furthering women and equality, I believe, and I hope that you do too, that there can now no longer be any justification for any MP to accept the EHRC code submitted. It must be rejected.

Whether one believes that trans people are their acquired gender and should be treated as such in law, or whether on believes that trans people should be treated as their assigned sex at birth is in many respects immaterial to the main point I make above.

The establishment of a hierarchy of equality is at odds with the fundamental principles of a democratic state and must be rejected.

I trust and hope that you will take this step, and join the other 50 labour MPs who have signed this motion.

And finally, upon researching this situation, I discovered to my pleasure and surprise that the management and BYM trustees of the Quakers reaffirmed their explicit support for trans people's inclusion, reissuing their facilities guidance that supported the right to dignity and privacy for those of the trans community when accessing their services https://www.quaker.org.uk/documents/statement-of-policy-on-provision-of-trans-inclusive-facilities-bym following the Supreme Court's ruling in 2025

I would never presume that I understood another's faith better than they do, and do not bring up this to attempt to do so, but I wanted you to know that it does encourage me, and I am in admiration of the Quaker (movement? people? flock?) that they have been, and continue to be, so committed to the protection of the dignity and privacy of all their visitors and flock, whether cisgender or transgender.

I went to many other country's websites - like Malta, Spain, France, Belgium, Denmark, Luxemburg, Portugal, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway...

So many other countries are not promoting hatred of trans people
So many other countries that recognise that trans women are women
So many other countries that recognise that trans men are men
So many other countries that are starting to recognise nonbinary people exist and deserve recognition

So many other countries are not being hypocrites!

Unlike the UK actively persecuting, discriminating against, torturing (conversion therapy is torture!), and withholding life-saving medication trans people, yet with the same face saying it's going to act against transphobia?
