Popping in briefly to say I'm still alive but not planning on coming back in the near future.
Since my neighbors have been making my house shake the entire day long because they're having their roof power washed, I'm begging everyone to read the moss chapter in my book, Nature Obscura. You don't have to waste money and water and make your neighbors angry. You can let the moss grow!
Two more weeks of #完全変態 (holometabolism or complete pervert) are done, finishing off the month of May. The last two weeks include a pair of sea cucumbers who travel together once they meet and jellyfish who actually physically mate, unlike other jellies. #Invertebrates
I appreciate this spider diligently defending my mailbox from junk mail and bills. #Invertebrates
I found several tardigrades and tons of nematodes and they all appear normal, no red paint on them. Here's one of them, still white as a ghost.
They painted the curbs at my park, right over the moss, and I immediately wondered whether the tardigrades in the moss also ended up red. So I collected some. We'll find out later today once they soak for awhile!
There was so much cottonwood fluff falling today it looked like it was snowing and it actually got up my nose.
I got a really fun delivery in the mail today from @rapidpunches.itch.io, thank you! I'm going to enjoy reading through all of these.
Reading outside usually means bug friends join me, like this teeny tiny mite. #Invertebrates
@petrathepostdoc.bsky.social I saw this today, it looks like your swole cutiefly lol
Here are the last 3 weeks of #完全変態 (holometabolism or complete pervert). We have bees that find orchids so sexy they want to mate with them. Then we have sea hares who form mating chains and finally gender changing green spoonworms...
I wish you'd fix translate first, it's worthless garbage and you've made it unusable with no alternatives. What the hell is this complete nonsense?
Meanwhile the dogwood in the park by my house is incredibly dramatic about being rained on and is acting like it's going to die because it got a little wet.
I dunno what's in my soil, but my red-twig dogwood is now nearly as tall as my house. I'm not complaining though because it feels like I'm living in a treehouse. And the bees are very happy.
For years we've had osprey nesting in Rainier Beach, but I noticed someone had removed their nest from a utility tower and I was upset, until today, when I saw that they've returned to the neighborhood and started building a new nest right over the high school!
@restingdinoface.bsky.social I'm cleaning my bookshelves today and took the opportunity to fix your cover
My David Attenborough collection. I even bought a British dvd player many years ago so I could watch the shows that weren't available here. These days I have many of them digitally.
When I was working on my first book, Nature Obscura, I wrote to David Attenborough to tell him how much he inspired me, which led to me writing that book and to thank him. I never expected a hand written letter in return. It's one of my greatest treasures. Happy 100th birthday, Sir David.
I just realized my pass has expired but there's no chance in hell I'm getting the new one.
In happier times this morning before a dog attacked me, I painted this シマエナガ, Japanese long-tailed tit. I rarely paint birds, but it's for a gift. Maybe I'll try more birds once in a while.
Today is the final day of our spring #InverteFest! Keep sharing your invertebrates until the end of the day. It's gotten sunny and warm in Seattle and over the last couple days I've seen a lot of painted lady butterflies. Looks like it might be an explosion year. Here are older photo of one.
I got the new worm!! It's exciting Pokemon Go released a new invertebrate Pokemon during #InverteFest.
Two days left for this #InverteFest so BRING OUT YOUR BUGS! And all other invertebrates too. Here are a few more bugs from my yard over the last few years.
Hahaha!! I hadn't evolved flygon yet but look what JUST showed up, and at my house! You must have been good luck
It's cloudy today in Seattle, so here's an older photo of a mason bee wearing a pollen hat and boots for #InverteFest.
I also love Gatrodon, the nudibranch Pokemon and my usual buddy when I play. #InverteFest
