Today is Arbaeen, 40 days after the assassination of the Prophet’s grandson, Imam Husayn, in Karbala on Ashura, so I have removed the symbolic shackle in honor of the prisoners from the Prophet’s family who were released on this day almost 1400 yrs ago. May God hasten the release of all prisoners.

The Shia Muslim Council of Southern California also released a statement after the US strike on Arbaeen pilgrims, calling for the US and relevant govts to take “every feasible precaution…to prevent civilian casualties and preserve safe passage for people engaged in peaceful religious worship.“

We call on the United States to work with relevant governments, humanitarian organizations, and other parties to protect innocent civilians traveling to Iraq for Arbaeen. Millions of men, women, children, and elderly worshippers will soon travel through crossings such as Shalamcheh solely to participate in a peaceful religious observance that has endured for more than one thousand years. They are civilians and noncombatants whose purpose is to practice their faith. Their safety must remain paramount.

We call on all parties to the conflict to recognize the humanitarian importance of the routes used by Arbaeen pilgrims. Border crossings, passenger terminals, pilgrimage roads, rest stations, medical facilities, and humanitarian service areas supporting worshippers must be protected from the effects of military operations. Every feasible precaution must be taken to prevent civilian casualties and preserve safe passage for people engaged in peaceful religious worship.

Religious freedom does not cease during armed conflict. International humanitarian law requires parties to distinguish between military objectives and civilians and to take constant care to spare the civilian population. Millions of peaceful worshippers undertaking one of the
oldest continuous religious pilgrimages deserve to do so without fear of violence.

We also call for a prompt, transparent, and impartial investigation into the reported strike, including the circumstances of the attack, the identities of those killed or injured, and its effects on civilians traveling through the Shalamcheh crossing.

As millions prepare for this sacred pilgrimage, we urge governments and the international community to affirm that protecting innocent worshippers is a shared humanitarian responsibility. The sanctity of human life and the freedom to practice one's faith peacefully must remain above the violence of armed conflict.

According to family members and fellow journalists, Qandil had been documenting arrests of Shia citizens and restrictions surrounding Ashura commemorations shortly before his disappearance. His brother stated that multiple Shia Muslims, including relatives and community members, were arrested during coordinated security raids the same day. Activists also criticized the recurring closure of Cairo's Imam Hussein Mosque and shrine during Ashura under the stated justification of maintenance work, arguing that the practice disproportionately affects Shia worshippers seeking to
observe the occasion.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over restrictions on freedom of religion and the use of enforced disappearance in Egypt. Groups including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have documented previous cases involving arbitrary detention, prolonged incommunicado detention, and the targeting of religious minorities, including Shia Muslims. Members of Egypt's Shia community have called on authorities to respect constitutional guarantees of religious freedom, disclose the whereabouts of detainees, and end measures they describe as discriminatory
on the basis of sectarian affiliation.

Nice to see some posts on FB today from Michigan Rep Rashida Tlaib and @abdulelsayed.bsky.social about Ashura as well. A large percentage of Muslims in the metro Detroit area and in the state as a whole identify as Shia Muslim and observe Muharram as the most solemn month in the Islamic calendar.

The religious diversity of Queens is part of what makes it the World's Borough. I was honored today to participate in the Ashura commemoration at the Al-Khoei Mosque and Islamic Center.

For many Muslims, Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Husayn (peace be upon them). This day is especially significant for Shia Muslims, for whom it is the foremost day of mourning.

Imam Husayn stood against the tyrannical rulers of his time. He challenged corruption, the unchecked accumulation of wealth, and the rise of hereditary monarchy. He, his family, and his companions paid for this righteous struggle with
their lives.

The Shia community is part of the rich mosaic that make our borough and our city what they are. At a time of rising Islamophobia and Shiaphobia, we must stand united against all forms of hate and bigotry. Ashura reminds us that justice, dignity, and service to others—not economic injustice and endless war—are the path forward.

For those who aren’t familiar, the Islamic New Year is not generally celebrated as a happy day. The 1st 10 days of the month of Muharram mark the occasion when the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Husayn, stood up to the tyrant of his time and was massacred with his friends and family in Karbala.

Once libraries are nonexistent any modern fascist movement wouldn't even have to burn books, but flick one switch and they'd be remotely deleted from your Amazon Kindle or similar digital "library".

Capitalists are already building the infrastructure to do this through DRM, so stop believing tech is apolitical - the defunding of libraries and paywalling of information are all part of this.
