Best mail is queer comics mail! Got the full set of beautiful new queer zine 'Framing Mulled Lives' stories of older gay men in nz by @donchooinz.bsky.social
Māui - te kaihao i te rā (Māui - Sun Catcher) Written by Tim Tipene, illustrated by Zak Waipara, and reo Māori translation by Rob Ruha is the next book on our list. natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/...
It would be remiss of me to do a list of Māori comics and illustrated books (or other library items) and not mention Gavin Bishop. My problem is really which Bishop book to highlight! In the end I chose Atua: Māori Gods and Heroes: natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/...
I got to see Tangaroa Paul (Ngāti Kahu, Te Aupouri, Ngāti Kuri, Ngāi Takoto, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Rēhia, Ngāpuhi and Marqueses Islands of Tāhiti) as the Same Same But Different Writers fest earlier this year, as they read Rere Atu Taku Poi! natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/...
The ephemera collection at the library is one of my favourite things. Here's a poster made in 1992 for Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission): natlib.govt.nz/records/2302...
The nice thing about this little thread is that I'm getting to expand my knowledge. I came across this book as I was researching and had a read/listen to it yesterday. Hineraukatauri me te ara pūoro by Elizabeth Gray, Rehua Wilson and the Haumanu Collective
Since it's 50 years since the hīkoi it seems appropriate to share this recent release: E Whaea o te Motu which is written in English by David Hill, translated into Te Reo Māori by Stacey Morrison, and beautifully illustrated by Story Hemi-Moorehouse
Today's pukapuka is Te Wehenga: The Separation of Ranganui and Papatūānuku by Mat Tait (Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, Rangitāne o Wairau, Ngāti Kuia). It's a beautifully drawn piece of art, using Te Reo Māori and English together. natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/...
It is a sci-fi apocalyptic poem that is an epic story, but also written in such a way that it's also a really cool for learning the language (there are some translations so even if you have limited Te Reo Māori you can still follow along).
Also - friendly reminder that the Ōtautahi Zinefest is on this weekend! August 30-31st 11am-4pm Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna O Waiwhetu Accessibility hour 11am-12pm 312 Montreal St Central City
A big regret from my travels is not buying this where's wally shirt from brava fabrics 💔💔 It's so good. If anyone knows of good work shirts, I'd like to find some similarly joyous things to wear to work.
Beware of me! It's trans awareness week. I'm wearing my surprise pin in honor of your awareness of me.
Flight home cancelled. So spending two extra days in Naarm with @popkelp.bsky.social

This full-page ad for the Labour Party in The Lisstener Nov 15, 1975 is so weird, I love it.

Came across this article (whilst looking for a Tom Scott cartoon) in the NZ Listener (March 2, 1974) talking about NZ society of authors public lending fund. I knew it was a cool fun, I didn't realise it was a world first! authors.org.nz/public-lendi...
Janet's illustrations were being regularly published in Chch newspapers in the late '20s: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/TS19291217.2.146.13.6.1? And she married Ira John Petterson in 1950 (the year World Patrol ended).
UPDATE! Thanks to some amazing sleuths on X - CR Dunford (publisher and Editor) ran the mag out of 'Dunford Studios': https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19641222.2.180 and a "Miss J. L. Rive" worked for Dunford Studios - https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19381220.2.26
There’s a note from the editor saying that they will work with the artist to bring a new and exciting story to future issues, but from then on in I can’t find any comic stories.
Somewhere between Vol10 Issues 3-5 the format changes back again, to being prose with one or two illustrations, and then the series ends completely in Vol 11. No.4 (December 1950).
Interestingly, it changes back again to a full comic strip in Vol. 5 No.3 and really starts experimenting with panel layout.
Now, I may be seeing things but on Vol1 No2 p22, there looks to me like a small initial signature on the bottom of panel 32 – JP, perhaps?
He also is pretty diligent about signing his work, even small illustrations so I think it’s safe to say it’s not him. I’ve found a few illustrations by L. Wilding in later issues, and Wilding only seems to only sign sporadically, but here’s some examples of their work.
It looks like most of the spot illustrations, and a few of the regular cartoon strips are done by Carl A. Lye (he often signs CAL) and his style is pretty cartoony and seems to be more on the ‘funnies’ style of strip comics.
On the back cover of Vol.1 No.4 There’s a “messages from behind the scenes” and three people have signed under the artist category. I’ve attached a copy of it – looks to me like “Janet L. Pine” (???), “Carl A. Lye” and “L. Wilding”
Another comics mystery! I’m doing some research on ‘World Patrol: The Adventures of Mark Steel and Dawn Randal’. A serial comic that ran out of the NZ Junior Digest. Here’s the Listing: https://natlib-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/1s57t7d/NLNZ_ALMA21218788730002836
