Did my first post-cancer reading at a literary event last night. It went well, performance-wise, but my heart rate was around 120bpm the entire time. I kept telling my body: 'you've done this before. I recently reread Sense & Sensibility and watched the 1996 film in theater. It’s still my favorite Austen novel and my fav film adaptation of her work. I’m Elinor by family role but Marianne in mood and the phrase ‘inside you there are two Dashwood sisters’ kept coming to mind as I reread the book.

It’s about how we react (good and bad) to suffering, found family, and as with all John’s work, pro-disability (the Atlas encounter made me cry).

Jo Walton’s LENT is quiet and moving. I never thought a SFF alt-history of Florence’s Savonarola being stuck in a Groundhog’s Day purgatory cycle would move me as much as this did but it’s another story I think about often. Its final line made cry and hug the book close.

My grandma gave me this copy of A GIRL OF THE LIMBERLOST decades ago. It’s a treasured not only for the story (think Anne of Green Gables + mother issues and environmentalism) but because it reminds of how much Grandma loved books—she gave me so many classics when I was young so I’d love them too.

Battle for Middle-Earth II: The Rise of the Witch King. Vasant and I only have Bootcamp installed on our Macs to continue playing this. There’s a whole Discord group dedicated to patching it to keep it working. 19 years of campaigns!

… and I made a Peach Poppyseed Olive Oil Cake, he made quiche, and we set out our fancy coffee service. It’s not a trip to the beach, but we’ve been working all day on a dream project: talking punk music, climate chaos, mutual aid, and the concepts of utopia in fiction. Happy anniversary to us.
