A view down the valley of Bannerdale Beck. We are looking down from the rocky, steep slope at the head of the valley, the green u-shaped valley below stretches off with the Bannerdale Beck visible weaving along the bottom. In the distance is farmland and on the horizon, the hills of the North Pennines

From the summit of Blencathra (868m) the sharp ridge of Saddleback drops away to our right with a path along the top. Before us lies North Lakeland, rounded hills with patchwork of farmland between them, and two lakes - Derwent Water and I think Ullswater - can be seen between the distant hills. The sky is a hazy, hot blue, with a few fluffy white clouds.

Looking down the other way from the summit of Blencathra at the ridge that leads down to Scales Fell, down the steep slope zig-zags a broad, clear, rocky path, forking a few times as it runs along the ridge.

Scales Tarn sits in a bowl at the base of the crags that descend from Blencathra. Broad footpaths lead to it from four directions. Behind it the ground rises up again to the ridge of Bannerdale Crags, and still more hills crowd behind.

Took the car to the garage up the coast yesterday and walked 16km back to the house. it was FAR TOO HOT and also there's nudists in the dunes on Druridge Bay, who knew (probably everyone except me) got the bus back to pick up the car

On the valley floor, we're looking over a wire fence at a beautiful meadow full of wildflowers. Looked at some rocks and old things with the old man

the arch of a large tumble-down lime kiln. A stone building has a brick arch, under it is more stonework down to a layer of bricks at ground level with two smaller arches. There's a lot of fallen masonry and rubble.

Egg thieves reportedly active in the North East, the one species we'd all be happy to see go extinct. It's also been a long time since it was a couple of weirdos in stupid hats, with organised crime potentially making them very dangerous

After recent events at the Seaton Carew Little Tern site, we believe that egg thieves are operating in the area. Two individuals were seen at the prom wall at 1am Tuesday armed with thermal imager and laser. They withdrew as the warden approached. Suspicions were confirmed when this evening I found a rake concealed. Inside the site close to the prom. I understand similar issues have been reported as far away as scaling dam. Given that the imager and laser would retail at £2k it smacks of organised crime. Could I ask that you remain vigilant and report any suspicions to the police. Extra eyes looking out for these people may be a deterrent in itself.

I'd planned to go up The Cheviot today, but got as far as Mounthooly and didn't feel up to it. I turned right, and headed up The Schil instead, for a lovely day in the College Valley and up on the Border Ridge. #Northumberland #Hiking #Cheviots

The road along the College Valley, to the north of The Cheviot. The patched tarmac lane curves to the right, while the valley itself is ablaze with the yellow of flowering gorse, small trees poking out of the valley bottom everywhere. Steep grassy hills rise up out of the valley, their lower slopes are blanketed with either natural broadleaf growth, or clumps of forestry plantation. The sky is blue with high fluffy white clouds.

Jagged grey rocks stand tall out of a pile of smaller stones, perhaps the remains of an ancient cairn, on the summit of The Schil, surrounded by grass and patches of blaeberry.

an old five-bar hurdle (a gate that sits in slots rather than on hinges) with tall fenceposts either side, attached to which is an old and rusted deerfence. It leads to a gently sloping grassy hill, with scruffy patches of yellow rush. More green hills with patches of woodland in the distance, leading away to the horizon under the blue sky with high white clouds.

The grassy slope stretches gently ahead to yet more grassy hills, plantation forestry peaking out from a dip. Dominating the horizon is the bulky massif of The Cheviot, with the right hand side dark brown with heather and bog.

A late start and grey weather, so just a little 15km walk around some hillforts above the Breamish Valley. Love walking around these, so much history. Today I was wondering what the residents of these ancient sites called where they lived? #Northumberland #Hiking #Hillforts

A view down the Breamish Valley, a steep-sided valley with a river and a single track road snaking down. We're looking at a fork, the road follows a narrow stream to our left while the larger river Breamish flows down from the right. The steep slopes rising up either side are covered with scree, patches of heather, clumps of gorse, and stubby woodland.

On a flat area of grass at the edge of a steep sloped valley, the earthworks of a hillfort - mounded earth in two concentric rings. An area of broadlead woodland stands to the left, and the landscape sweeps down to green countryside beyond.

honestly getting obsessed with family history for a bit made me really good at stalking people who passed away 100 years ago. Here's the most stupid death of a relative I found, death by clog. He was only in his early 20s. Inquest held at his Uncle's pub (my ancestor)

An inquest was held on Thursday last, at the Queen's Head, Gallowgate, in this town, on the body of a young man, named Robert Carnaby Dobson, an apprentice to Robert Blakey, white-smith, Percy Street, who was killed on Tuesday evening. It appeared that a labourer, named George Hall, and his wife, were quarrelling, and a number of persons collected round to witness the affray; some observations made by the crowd to Hall, caused him, in a moment of irritation, to throw his clog at the by-standers, which struck the unfortunate young man on the head, and caused his death in a few hours. Verdict,—Manslaughter.

searching on www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk, and the details of the inquest are in the Irish Weekly & Ulster Examiner of Sat 18 July 1936. Looks like they never found the cyclists who were thought to have thrown the stone!

WOMAN KILLED BY A STONE

The unsuccessful efforts of the police to trace a party of cyclists, one of whose number was alleged to have thrown a large stone down a deep chasm known as Alum Pot, Ingleborough, Yorkshire, killing a woman, was mentioned at the inquest at Giggleswick on Monday.

The inquest was on Miss Mona Binks, aged 44, a school teacher, of St. Annes Grange, St. Annes Lane, Leeds, who belonged to the Pennine Cavers Club, Leeds.

Evidence was given that while being at the foot of a rope ladder 200 feet below the surface, she was struck by a large stone, which crashed down the shaft.

SILHOUETTE AGAINST THE SKY.

A member of the party, William Thomas Jones (33), of Eastcourt Ave., Leeds, said that on looking from a point 100 feet down the chasm he saw a figure silhouetted against the sky, in the act of hurling a large stone down a shaft.

A moment later he heard a cry from a point at which Miss Binks was standing. He was certain that the stone he saw thrown down was the one that killed Miss Binks.

Further evidence showed that the cyclists were at the edge of the pothole at about the time of the accident.

A verdict of accidental death was returned.
