Working in the Wellcome Library today & trying so hard to focus on my laptop and concentrate on a job app. I'm sitting opposite a book called "Lard & Longevity", and I think I'm going to crack.
Well this is quite lovely from the @wellcomecollection.bsky.social Library A whole range of sensory bits you can borrow to make your visit more comfortable, from blankets to fidget toys
Heading into the office for my last day after 8 years at Imperial and it feels very strange Just 2 papers to finish by the end of the day...
Thought I'd found a job that sounded great & I was qualified for... Going to take a wild guess they already know who they want and there's is 0 point in applying I'm so tired 😭
Monday morning significantly improved by this distinguished chap. All dressed up & ready for work
I always forget what a lovely time this is. And possibly the only day Londoners are nice to strangers #LondonMarathon
Desperately trying to convince myself I can't do another PhD. This one looks like a lot of fun.
Recovering from the worst job interview by drowning myself in pastry. Maybe if I stay here long enough, the post-academic bookshop-coffeeshop-bakery will manifest itself, and everything will be fine 😭😭
First Parkrun... and my first 5k... Appreciate it's not far for actual runners, but thoughts & prayers please
In the kind of presentation where you realise you've become the wrong kind of academic All this time I've been studying war & trauma, I could have been writing about whisky 🥃
When you've got Reviewer 2 comments to sort, three days to write a book chapter, and a dozen jobs to apply to... But the sun is out for the first time in months, and suddenly everything will be fine & everything seems possible
Found the perfect job in the perfect city. Clicked through to the recruiter's website... Perhaps not.
Finally made it to the Cecil Beaton exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery Struggling to understand why we brought 90s fashion back when this was an option... #museum 🗃
Had a brief exciting moment, thinking I'd found a big data historian job. Odd for Linkedin, but you never know 🤷♀️ Nope... just making AI more fascist
Was looking forward to spending the day sorting out grant & Fellowship applications. Was not expecting to be punched in the stomach by Agatha Christie on the way to work... #AcademicSky
Trying his best to smile for a picture on Ginger Cat Appreciation Day 🐈🐈
It's not every day you see a Viking longboat cruising through central London The Saga Farmann will be at St Kat's and open to visitors for the next couple of weeks
Just opened the @royalhistsoc.org newsletter & invite to @jbritishstudies.bsky.social Sept seminar "How I Wrote This" Now petitioning for all Friday meeting invites to come with a playlist, cocktail & frappé recipes
DID SCURVY & CONSUMPTION MAKE BOY KILL CATS Absurd reporting from the BBC. That "may" is doing so much work... Given he *hasn't* been diagnosed with either, you could replace adhd & autism in that sentence with literally any other condition If he had either, his lawyers would have used it
Struggling to navigate work's HR system to buy some new glasses Turns out they'll chip in *£25* (1/3 cost of lenses), on the condition that glasses are "solely" for computer use. They may not be used for other work-related tasks such as "Reading" or "Looking at colleagues" LOOKING AT COLLEAGUES
Looking forward to today's trip to Manchester and the LUSTRE Network's workshop on AI and gov records. Less excited about the 4.30am start...
I have never 'excelled' at a sport in my life. I've quit Couch to 5k nine times. So why is the hyper-competitive academic bit of my brain utterly convinced that with a bit of training, I'd smash a pentathlon.
Very excited to have caught The Midnight Bell at Sadler's Wells before it closes this eve But really feeling for the dancers, having to do 2+ hrs in a heatwave, in full tweed suits & knitwear 🥵
Time for this year's Great Exhibition Road Festival 🎉 It's going to be a packed weekend with +40,000 people signed up so far. 🦾 Join us in the Be A Scientist Zone to design a robot leg, take part in a research study, & test your skills with our prosthetics 🦿 #ExRdFest
Another great seminar from @britishacademy.bsky.social This time on transitioning from academia to consultancy Now to figure out how to make a viable & ethical consultancy from my work: explosions, pain & injuries Maybe a general approach is a better way forward...
Heading into 9 hrs of meetings with 0 breaks. Thoughts & prayers please.
Spending the first sunny day in ages like a true academic... inside in a seminar. In a session on 'Cursed Objects', flashing back to my undergrad at Royal Holloway & the spooky painting that gets covered in exams. It's rumoured to cause students to fail or go insane #ThePolarBearsMadeMeDoIt
Waiting for an hour, in the rain, to watch the Red Arrows zip in front of grey clouds feels like a terribly British way to celebrate #VEDay
