I have a question about some old things in my possession. These religious figures go in the little capsule containers I set next to them. I recently saw similar ones in a photo of random Civil War objects. I couldn’t find anything further. Any #history or #genealogy people happen to know more?

Wurman’s mom and dad immigrated two years before his birth. His desire to be a tool to harm immigrants makes me so angry. I don’t know what his parents’ status was when he was born here—but I do think it’s relevant that he share that since he’s a mouthpiece of this awful movement.

In 1985, he immigrated to the United States and settled with Hadassah and their first two children, Gilead and Oded, in Palo Alto, California.

I am 1/4 Sami. There are roughly 30,000 Sami living in the United States today. The Sami are indigenous peoples of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, living above the arctic circle for millenia. They are a federally recognized minority in some countries, but not in the United States.
My father was born in North Minneapolis.
My great grandparents lived here. To this day, those memories he had with them are the favorite of his youth.
I hope that one day we can go beyond identity politics, to governance of apt leaders, whose only litmus of success is their skill and vision for the future.

Both Lochren and Captain Coates reported one man missing, at Gettysburg, but this was a mistake.
The man they named was Michael Devlin, a plucky young Irishman of St. Paul in Company A. He was badly wounded on the 3d and reached another division hospital and so was lost for some time. He rejoined his company as soon as he could, and when his time was about up, he re-enlisted in the First Battalion for three years more, and finally died in a St. Louis hospital a few days before Lee surrendered.

I've seen few people asking why MN is so great. Part is that we've had uniquely creative, collaborative, and visionary public health leaders here who set up relationships and systems that continue to have lasting impact. Good example: 4 Oct 2000 Star Tribune (p. A10) article about fighting e. Coli.

In the 18 years since E. coli O157 was identified, the Health Department has developed ways to more quickly identify contaminations, track them and begin intervention procedures. To Minnesotans, that means many potential outbreaks are stopped in time to prevent widespread illness. The department has been actively working to control 0157 since 1982, when it was identified as an emerging pathogen, a microbe identified as a public health threat. Smith credits the leadership of former state epidemiologist Mike Osterholm. One of Osterholm's legacies is the close collaboration between the Health Department's epidemiology unit and the microbiology lab, Smith said. Another factor dates to 1987, when the department began to request that physicians report O157 infections to the state. Epidemiologists relied upon patient interviews to try to link
obvious cases. In 1994, the Health Department began using DNA fingerprinting on each

O157 sample to link cases in a more modern and efficient manner. "By properly classifying things rather than lumping them all together, we can see the common threads more clearly," said John Besser, clinical lab manager for the department. "We're ruling things in and ruling things out." Health Department officials also recruited students from the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health to form "Team Diarrhea," with the mission of interviewing patients to look
for common food sources. "We took three steps and rolled them into one package," said Craig Hedberg, a professor in the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health and Smith's predecessor at the Health Department. "A lot of laboratories had the ability to fingerprint bacteria, but very few had the resources to do it with all of the samples and then to link it with the interviews.

In 1998, the Health Department was instrumental in the creation of Pulse- Net, a service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that now broadcasts each 0157 sub-type to 42 state health departments across the country. Minnesota is also credited with playing a major role in
standardizing fingerprinting methods. In that way, states have comparable samples to examine and CDC can keep track of multistate outbreaks, such as one stemming from a Rochester meat-processing plant in 1999 that sickened people in Minnesota and in Maine.

I am still engaged in administering to the appetite of the inner man; but deeming it more advantageous to my fellow citizens, as well as to myself, to supply them with fresh, tender steaks and fat surloins of Beef and Mutton, than to be engaged in dealing out grog to them at five cents a drink and about twenty-five cents a DRUNK, I have associated myself with John Devlin, and will hereafter carry on the butchering business. I resent the idea the government can determine their morals instead of mine. And I frankly think the constant effort to harass people of wealth has a secondary but negative effect. When people make their first big hit, their first big capital gain, you want them to stay here. You want them to fund the orchestra, to fund foundations. You want them to continue to contribute to our society, to start venture capital, to invest in new businesses. And if you chase those people out because they think they're not wanted, or if you chase those people out or you don't attract people who are mobile, you will have a decline in many of the amenities we've just been talking about.

This is the kind of thing that has been rattling around my mind. The thing making people frustrated with Democratic response to the GOP is that it broadly lacks the level of vision—reconstruction, if you will—that extricating us from this mess requires. Couple paragraphs I really liked.

By contrast, it is not clear that Democrats have any sense of what they want the American Republic to be, versus a sense of the kinds of the policies they hope to institute. This is important because their constitutional vision, or lack thereof, will shape how they attempt to rebuild American democracy.

It was this view that led Republicans, Radical and otherwise, to write their aspirations toward freedom and political equality into the Constitution through the 14th and 15th Amendments. It also shaped how they responded to President Andrew Johnson and hostile Supreme Court justices, who tried to trim and curtail their vision.
They did not just override Johnson's vetoes; they impeached him. And they did not just criticize the court; they took steps to tie its hands, limit its power and strip its
jurisdiction. The extent to which Republicans in this era operated as an imperial Congress was the closest this country has ever come to congressional supremacy, the result of their expansive conception of American democracy.

I believe you're right -- he lost an arm in one of his stunts the year before and continued doing absolutely terrifying things!

Mr. DeRonda of Seattle, Wash., advance agent for the National Stock Company which is playing here this week, tells an interesting story about some of his experiences as a "sky man." Mr. DeRonda up until adout two years ago, had his Wright biplane and was making exhibition flights all over the country, but as he said, "I got mine." He was making a flight at Valentine, Neb., when as he was making an upward glide one of the struts broke and down came DeRonda, and as the plane hit the earth the engine loosened and landed on top of the aviator, tearing his left arm into shreds, which caused it to be amputated just below the shoulder. Mr. DeRonda was a partner of Max Lille, who was killed in a fall at
Galesburg about a year ago. After this accident he took to doing the parachute drop from a balloon.
He was the aviator who made the ascension at the Labor Day celebration at Streator two years ago. "Mink" DeRonda was also the first man in the history of aviation to make a parachute drop from an aeroplane, which he did at the implement show held in Peoria in October, 1915.

Found it! My grandfather was writing to Vernon Welch, who served in the MN state house for 15 years. I have so much enjoyably minor dirt on peoples’ grandparents/great-grandparents.

I certainly enjoyed hearing from you. It would appear that the Class of 1931 are doing one thing right at least, and that is purely staying alive. It has been a long time, Vern, since all of us were over at Minnesota with about eight guys on a gallon of moonshine booze, but it was a good class, and I think that all of us enjoyed the comradeship which has lasted throughout the years.

I love old houses here in part because of the history. The Broom family lived here for at least 50 years, and were fascinating (at least to me). (The image is my favorite of the articles. Several of the girls never married and Lillian was an artist for decades.)

OLD BROOMS
You can see over 500 old time garments in Donaldson's windows. The Broom sisters-Nellie and Lillian-of 3111 2nd ave S., contributed their share. One piece was a dress reported to have been worn by their mother when she and her husband walked all the way from Duluth to Minneapolis, because there were no trains in 1869.
Correction: It was their father who had done the walking. He had gone to Duluth by stage coach and not finding work, walked all the way home.

Board Director Joyner Emerick questioned why the audit shows no review of "specially designed instruction, which is modification to regular instruction to meet the unique needs of students identified for special education.
"Why is it absent? Because it is absent," Keenan said.
Keenan said the district lacks a well-defined process around specially designed instruction.

I am begging one of the actual academics in this area to write a commentary for the Strib about the choice of research article they used to make a very broad and dismissive statement.

The administration has increased political pressure on trans youth and their doctors, especially amid studies suggesting there is only marginal proof that puberty-blocking medications ease gender transitions.

I promised my child that I would share the art they’re creating with Bluesky—so you can expect occasional art posts. As a not very visually talented person, I’m always blown away by the level of detail.

Digital art of a kind of half-machine, half-bird named Nemni that has a currently erroring blue screen CRT monitor as part of xeir head, which also has a beak like quality and remaining eye. Its limbs are made of squiggly electrical cords and metal with remnants of some of the natural body. Many parts are metal and rusted. The background is very brightly colored and chaotic.

Man—this team at HealthPartners/Park Nicollet is having a *bad day*. I got one of these confusing texts and when I went into the system I winced for the people dealing with this.

I sometimes do random searches of certain last names in my family as OCR slightly improves for other languages. I found a list of names as part of this article in the Slovenian paper of the Jugoslav Socialist Federation. Chisholm was home to Jugoslav Socialist Club no. 22.

Headline translates to "Statement of Donations for Michigan Strikers" and the body is that the Chisholm Jugoslav socialist club no. 22 donated $120.65 to the chief treasurer in Denver. Below it is a lengthy list of the amounts and donors.

While Hegseth didn't respond to requests for comment, his father said many of his son's outspoken convictions today represent a recommitment to the Christian family values he tried to instill in his children with the help of a then-small church that has since grown to be Minnesota's largest.

What stage of “the economy is fine” are we in when Kris Lindahl’s real estate business decides it’s good tactics to send fake checks to people for the value of their homes? We’ve lived here a very long time and I’ve never seen something quite like this before.

This was mail sent as if it was a check—with the edges you bend and tear on perforations, and on the other side (not pictured) is a shaded area where the fake check is that says “original document.”

It even has that little line on the top about “document has a colored background, security features listed on back”

It just looks like a check for a lot of money with tiny disclaimers about how it’s not a real check.

Once upon a time the Strib opined that an adversarial relationship between the mayor and council might be good. (1978–this is not relevant to the overall piece, which was about DeMars changing his mind on a strong mayor system out of frustration with whatever changes they put in place).
