The bus pulled away as I realized the station was closed for the night. I immediately rejected the idea of chasing after it. If there was any way I could have looked even more pitiful to Scott, that would have been the way to do it. The sign on the door said they opened at 5:00 the following morning. There was nothing to do but wait it out. I flung down my duffle and sat on it. The noises around me were the normal night noises, but they made me think of every serial killer story I had ever heard. I got up and dragged my duffle to the station wall so I had something solid behind my back. That way, I reasoned, at least I’d be able to see them coming.

We drove all morning until we reached a college town. Stash pulled up at a deli, walked around to the trunk, and pulled out a backpack. I realized I was hungry, but I couldn’t figure out how to get to my money without Stash finding out about it. I also didn’t know if the deli would want to break a hundred. Those were details I hadn’t considered when I left home.

I really hoped he didn’t offer to marry her. A pregnant couple from the year before got married and lived with the girl’s parents until they finished school. They named their daughter Miracle, of all things.
That might have been that couple’s path, but I started formulating imaginary discussions with Joi where I convinced her to not make Ron my best friend-in-law.

Tania. Boyfriend Winston. Son Winston 4 called Little Man after Roll of Thunder. Tania was a reader to escape her abusive situation, but eventually ran off and was pregnant at 15. During the drug deal, Whitney's dad is on tv taking about adopting the girl, and Whitney and Tania recognize the shoulder caress he gives. She says something like what Jenny says about girls looking out for each other like it's too bad adopted girl doesn't have someone to look out for her. Whitney gives Stash money to give to Tania. “Someone needs to get the stable childhood we didn't.”

Ethan looked ecstatic, then concerned. He dug through his pockets, obviously not having any paper. He turned, aghast, to Connor who was doing the same thing.

I pulled a memo book from my purse, ripped off two sheets and handed them to Keith. He signed them and handed them over.

“Would you like a photo together?”

There seemed to be the very real possibility the boys would faint, pee themselves, or both.

“Could we?” Ethan breathed. “Sir.”

“Of course.”

Lazarus immediately went onto the dance floor, dancing much wilder than anyone else in the room. I hung back, feeling out of place. In high school, people who looked like Keith and Maxi stood out. Now about a hundred people surrounded me, and I felt different. I didn’t see anyone who looked like Whitney or Eric and felt like I’d fallen into some punk version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A glitter encrusted girl wearing gauzy chartreuse wings glided up.

Maxi, without L.A.’s knowledge, sent me a book L.A. had written on theater with Black youth. Since L.A. had written it, it was, of course, perfect. There wasn’t even a typo. Feeling too pale to be qualified on the topic, I sent it on to a Black agent friend who accepted it. Not knowing L.A.’s and my backstory, Tania told L.A. how she’d gotten the manuscript in the acceptance letter. I received a message from L.A. stating, “I’m never sure if I’m supposed to like you or not. But, I do thank you.”

Will passed the paper to me. It was a drawing showing a man in the middle of cooking, the exuberance of his personality and the heat of the kitchen coming off of the paper all those years later. Will no longer looked like that, but I knew without a doubt that he once had.

Every step took all my effort. Snow fell into my ankle boots as my feet broke the crust. I had to crawl under tree branches. And it was so cold. Finally, I reached the main road. I already felt as if I’d been walking forever. Two beams of light appeared in the distance. I dragged myself to the middle of the road, gritting my teeth so I could wave with my good arm. It dawned on me it might be too dark for them to see me. Oh, well, I thought. They’ll know I’m here when they run into me.

Taylor put their free hand on the edge of the box. It took Domi a second to realize, but she then did the same thing. We all looked at each other. Finally, I started crying.

“One, two, three,” Taylor said.

Together, we dumped the box. I half expected a breeze to blow the ashes back into our faces, a situation which would have made Andrew laugh, but they poetically floated down, making a cloud in the water which spread apart before starting to flow down the river.

We watched in silence as the milkiness got lighter and lighter until the water finally ran clear again.

After my shower, I pulled on my skirt and tank and stuffed my bra in my purse. I hesitated about my underpants since they definitely smelled like sex, but I finally decided to turn them inside out and wear them. My skill at getting out of cars was apparently low enough, I figured erring on the side of caution was more important than waiting for clean underwear.

I thought fast.
“Oh, I just sometimes forget I'm not in France. Their attitude is you don't need a perfect figure to wear a bikini. I pinched the top of my thighs and laughed self-deprecatingly. “Here I am, flaws and all.”
If Nan was capable of blushing, she would have. I figured she'd picked her swimsuit so the cute skirt ruffle would hide her upper thighs. Me saying mine weren't perfect when they were so much better than hers hopefully made her self-conscious about her future saddlebags.
