Rosetta stone for “The extended central dogma of Mol Biol”. Bottom: b-globin 🧬. Middle: b-globin protein🩸. Top: cell types and organs 🫁 ❤️🧠. We understand the gene to protein transition, we are still working out how cell types are formed. Easteregg at the bottom for @matthewcobb.bsky.social #SciArt

...and now something for RNA enthusiasts @nccr-rna-disease.bsky.social The function of the vault complex has finally been solved: it is a lampshade.

The tripartite attachment complex (TAC) of Trypanosoma brucei is required for mitochondrial DNA segregation. Want to know how its outer membrane part is assembled? Check out our new preprint www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
TbTim20 a novel subunit of the non-canonical trypanosomal TIM complex is only essential in kDNA-lacking cells. This is likely because, as yeast Pam17, it supports protein import at low membrane potential doi.org/10.1101/2025...
I enjoyed my stay in Glasgow a lot – Many thanks to Shikha @shikhas.bsky.social and Lilach @sheinerlab.bsky.social for hosting us! - They even arranged a kDNA network -themed carpet in our Hotel room.
I’m presently writing a manuscript on the TAC and need a break. - The TAC is an amazing structure, only few people know about. It connects the mitochondrial genome of trypanosomes with the flagellum. – Here is schematic drawing of the TAC (left side 🙂) inspired by an anatomical drawing of Leonardo.
A piece of science history about RNA, oxygen, and mice cages There is nothing is more important in an experiment than the proper controls. But what should you do if your experimental control fails? - read my short essay on failed experimental controls. www.embopress.org/doi/full/10....?
Intersection between Art and Science: The minicircle network of the kinetoplast DNA from trypanosomes. - Trypanosomes have arguably the most complicated mitochondrial genome.
My first post on bsky! Parasite trivia: The first trypanosomatid species was discovered 1841 in the blood of a trout by Prof. Gustav Valentin of the University of Bern in Switzerland
