University of Washington just named a woman as their new play-by-play announcer. Given the good ol' boys and sportsbros that make up the booster club, I was pretty surprised. Knowing how fickle the fans are - and though an alum, I'm not one - when the team sucks, they'll find some way to blame her.
Speaking of Alaska, this is a perfect opportunity to bring up Michael "Hell Roaring Mike" Healy - the first African American to captain a US government vessel. The Coast Guard's largest and most advanced ice breaker is named for him, and happens to be homeported in my city of Seattle.
