Last Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision in Mullin v. Doe and Trump v. Miot to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 350,000 Syrian and Haitian people. All San Diego and Imperial Valley residents should have the right to live safe and happy lives without fear.

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship, a major victory in maintaining and reaffirming the rights of everyone born in this country. “We should celebrate today, but the fight is not over,” says Frederick Carroll, legal director at the ACLU-SDIC.
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship reaffirms a core constitutional principle established in the 14th Amendment – children born in this country belong in this country,” says Norma Chávez-Peterson, our executive director, in response to today’s ruling.
On June 15, 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was announced as a new program to protect undocumented youth who came to the U.S. as children from deportation. Trump is threatening this vital program, endangering thousands of people who have called this country home for years.

This data confirms what we’ve known – that the power that police look to hold over San Diegans disproportionately affects Black community members most. With police stops in general occurring at a higher rate for our Black community members, the chance for violent or harmful outcomes increases.
