Tagesspiegel 27.07 Berlins Regierender Bürgermeister, Kai Wegner (CDU), sieht im Islamismus die größte Gefahr für die queere Gemeinschaft in Deutschland. Das sei „ganz klar“, sagte er auf einer Pressekonferenz, „und das muss auch gesagt werden, wenn es genauso ist“. Wer nicht die Bereitschaft zeige, Probleme anzusprechen, der werde sie nicht lösen können. Weiterhin betonte er: „Die Regenbogenflagge gehört in die Mitte unserer Gesellschaft, sie gehört in die Mitte der Stadt.“

„Queering Holocaust“? Erinnerungskultur zwischen Anerkennung und Diversifizierungstrend

In den letzten Jahren hat sich das öffentliche Erinnern an den Holocaust deutlich verändert. Die Verfolgung homosexueller Männer im NS wurde lange beschwiegen, was sich nur langsam änderte. Neuerdings wird häufig auch von queeren Holocaust-Opfern gesprochen. Diese Verschiebung wird vielerorts als notwendige „Diversifizierung“ des Gedenkens verstanden. Dabei scheint die Anerkennung verschiedenster Opfergruppen ein Anliegen zu sein. Doch gleichzeitig gerät dadurch die Auseinandersetzung mit dem, was der Begriff Holocaust eigentlich bezeichnet, die Ermordung von sechs Millionen Jüdinnen und Juden durch die Nationalsozialisten, zunehmend ins Hintertreffen. Der Vortrag kritisiert diesen erinnerungspolitischen Trend. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, welche Konsequenzen es hat, wenn die Auseinandersetzung mit Antisemitismus durch die Betonung anderer Opfergruppen an Spezifik verliert und was mögliche Gründe für diese Entwicklung sind.

Debora Eller ist Soziologin und Publizistin. 2025 gab sie den Sammelband „Das Subjekt Frau“ mitheraus. Außerdem publiziert sie zu den Themen feministische Theorie, Kritik des Antisemitismus und Psychoanalyse.

Spent the week here with students passing their end-of-semester oral exams. I'm so proud of how much they learned and how good they were at expressing difficult and nuanced thoughts on queer history, theory, and European colonial legacies. It's always sad to say goodbye at the end of a semester 😊

As every year, I've asked my students in European Studies to summarize one aspect of our discussions, readings, and topics with a meme. We use these memes for the final discussion in my seminar on European integration & historicizing Europe as a concept, idea, and space in the 20th century:

Das "4+2"-Modell der Ampel verschwindet vollständig, die Anschlusszusage ebenfalls, und selbst die im Ampel-Kabinettsbeschluss bereits enthaltenen begrenzten Lockerungen der sogenannten Tarifsperre tauchen im neuen Entwurf nicht wieder auf. Stattdessen soll für Promovierte eine Qualifizierungsbefristung von wie bislang bis zu sechs Jahren gelten. Zugleich entfällt allerdings die bisherige Möglichkeit, nicht ausgeschöpfte Befristungszeiten aus der Promotionsphase in die Postdoc-Phase mitzunehmen.

Yesterday I had the joy to virtually host @jonahgarde.bsky.social in Flensburg. Jonah presented their research to my BA students. This semester we are discussing queer modern history and epistemic violence and Jonah's contribution was a great add-on to what we read for class.

Abstract
Global mega-events like the Olympics, World Cup, and Eurovision Song Contest routinely enable and provide cover for extreme violence and suffering, including displacement, environmental destruction, war, and genocide, but the number of people who watch these events has never been higher. This article examines how people navigate the consumption of popular culture they know to be complicit in harm but nonetheless enjoy. The limited attention international relations has paid to the mechanics of complicity has primarily focused on the conditions that coerce people into complicity under oppressive or capitalist societies. It has overlooked the ways we willingly engage with popular culture we know implicates us in harm, not because we are coerced, but because we enjoy it. Introducing focus group data with Eurovision fans, I argue that the liberal enjoyment cultivated at international mega-events entices fans to ignore the violent politics these events are inexorably implicated in as contests between states. In an environment designed to keep people watching, fans wrestle with whether to set their politics aside, find compromises between enjoyment and political conviction, or forgo enjoyment altogether. Their choices reveal how enjoyment drives complicity in relation to popular culture that we do not always (want to) recognize as enabling harm.
