Spacebar caught my eye with this statement! Spacebar chat provides the back end for basically a Discord dupe. You just need a front end client to use it. Currently, the one that's "stable" is Fermi. It's extremely buggy but I think with time they'll be a very promising option.

I'm on the fence about Valour.gg because of this statement from Spike, but "Stormwarrior" mentioned this that is a green flag for me. Hard to gauge this. I'll continue to watch carefully and see how this goes. From my understanding they don't agree with generative AI stealing from creatives.

Valour staff, SpikeViper, states: There are tasks, however, that I will us AI for. Like a 5000 line file that needs to be refactored in the same way over and over.

Valour staff, Stormwarrior: Root is venture capital funded, stoat privacy issues, some newer ones are "vibe coded". We have history, full open source, ground-up coded. And we're not just trying to clone discord like some of the others... we have things like tabs and multi chat windows, nested categories, extremely robust customization with custom CSS etc."

this is the COO for Root app. Mind the "now focused on leveraging AI with custom tooling to build intelligent user support and feedback systems." take this one with a grain of salt because the statement is vague. Still something to keep in mind though while looking into alternatives
