I added an addendum to my "What Even Is Retro Gaming?" blog post with my updated thoughts on the matter:

Addendum (7/11/26): The "how do we define retro" discourse popped up on Bluesky again and I came across this frankly extremely thoughtful post by the user animal jayson who says:

he settles it forever: "retro" refers to a specific time period which was defined in the ps3 era. the bar for what is considered "retro" does not move forward as time passes. it's comparable to "modernist" literature, the name being temporal doesn't mean it changes over time, it's just a name.

and it's just like, wow, yeah, that's it. "Retro" as we've come to know it in gaming is pretty specifically associated with pixel art/low poly aesthetics, alongside specific design philosophies (plug in a game and play it, no updates/DLC), game mechanics (losing all your lives means you start over from the beginning), and genre conventions (top down RPGs, 2D platformers, beat-em-ups, etc). In that sense it is an artistic movement within video gaming with its own conventions that people may call upon when creating new video games or even video game hardware, hence why sometimes even new things are described as "retro" (again, like the actual original meaning of the word).

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter, I guess. Typically when people say stuff like "retro gaming" it just means playing old video games. I also never actually branded this blog as a specifically retro gaming blog outside of this post, haha.

I didn't directly cite the VGHF archive in my latest blog post but I did take a look to see what game magazines of the time had to say about Virtual Hydlide. This one says it has "universally appealing presentation" (Next Generation, Volume 1, Number 6, Issue 6)

The plot may be uninspiring, but
Virtual Hydlide promises to offer
players RPG elements harking back to
the Ultima Underworld series. The
characters develop as the story
progresses, there's a variety of objects
and creatures with which to interact,
and Jim can run as well as walk through
his environment. Although the game
resembles Elite's recent 3DO and PC
title, Virtuoso, the game is certain to be
much deeper and more involving.
It's encouraging to see that third
party developers are as keen to venture
into 3D territory as Sega itself.
Hydlide's reputation alone will ensure
that the Saturn version whips up a
significant degree of interest in Japan,
and its universally appealing
presentation makes a Western
release seem inevitable.

welllll I just bought Hydlide on Steam and I ended up submitting a refund request because the game launches in a static window that only covers part of the screen (720p???). There is no options menu or screen options. That is disappointing.

thinking about how in Japan, SEGA re-released the original Phantasy Star on a Sega Genesis cartridge. Anyway, that new Cuphead game looks interesting!

Phantasy Star Fukkokuban is a revised version of the Master System game on a Mega Drive cartridge.

Seven years after the original game hit store shelves and only a few months after the release of the fourth game, Sega ran a Japanese promotional campaign known as Explore the Roots of Phantasy Star. As part of the campaign, the company introduced Phantasy Star Fukkokuban (ファンタシースター復刻版, lit. "Phantasy Star Reprint"), a revised version of Phantasy Star on a Mega Drive cartridge, and gave away 2000 copies as part of an official lottery.[20] The interest generated by the lottery later led Sega to give it a commercial release exclusively in Japan on April 2, 1994.[3] The version given away in the lottery is identical to the commercial release with the exception of a letter addressed to the winners.[20]

This rerelease features a unique revision of the game,[21] likely incorporating the bug fixes implemented in Phantasy Star's localized Master System release[22] and boasting support for the Mega Drive Control Pad's C and START buttons.[23][24] Internally, the rerelease consists of the Master System game on a Mega Drive PCB with a programmable logic array to account for firmware differences (a setup also found in the Power Base Converter)[21] and the appropriate connector pin to signal Master System compatibility mode changed accordingly.[25]

managed to find Map Guy btw, and the overworld map that you get just shows general areas of the world as opposed to how specific screens are connected. It's not that useful but it's nice to have some context as to where you are, I guess.
