‘Parades Gone By’, a short story in The Georgia Review www.thegeorgiareview.com/posts/parade...

The apartment was a cluster of small rooms, each with its door open, a little kitchen, and an even more diminutive bathroom, a slightly larger living room: a museum of light and dark, its walls dressed in scarlet brocade wallpaper, dimmed by smoke and time, dense with an odor of vintage roses and coffee, and an unnamable undertow; nocturnal and marine. There were posters of Céline and Julie Go Boating and Children of Paradise, and one for Greed, with a glowering illustration of Gibson Gowland, with his huge froth of hair; black, arched eyebrows; and lost, brutal stare.

The tower was finished. When we went there it looked bleak and foolish, like a monument to a disgraced hero, a folly built for some cancelled celebration. However, we dutifully filled it with furniture, with kittens that the children had found in a hedge. We made it work, because we had money. At home, in the shabby, dying house that my father had set us up in, the past was never entirely forgotten. In the tower there was only the future. We abandoned it, saying we would return in the summer. In the meantime we employed women to keep it clean, as one might employ cleaners for a sepulchre in which one hopes to rest, at some distant date, in peace.

The stillness of everything James Salter, from ‘Akhnilo’

Outside, the trees were like black reflections. The stars were hidden. The only galaxies were the insect voices that filled the night. He stared from the open window. He was still not sure if he had heard anything. The leaves of the immense beech that overhung the rear porch were close enough to touch. For what seemed a long time he examined the shadowy area around the trunk. The stillness of everything made him feel visible but also strangely receptive. His eyes drifted from one thing to another behind the house, the pale Corinthian columns of the arbor next door, the mysterious hedge, the garage with its rotting sills.
Nothing.

At Deception Bay
The sun plenipotentiary in Capricorn, bay water
jangles its bells. Stunned to a torpor on the sour-salt sunstruck surface of noon, ghostly mud crabs
rise to meet their image in the sun, bubbles burst, each one a star, a gaseous world poured out of the Coalsack as we tumble towards winter
- the middle of our year. Summer goes. Almost un-noticed
its burning down, the slow burning out of atoms like galaxies
in us. I come back here after twenty years, and no particle of me
but has suffered change. I am
not the same - though nothing changes here: wood rots in the softwood pier, cyclones carry
salt into foreshore gardens, into nail-holes and the nails go brittle, blacken, snap. We are renewed. On a whitewood door-frame pencil marks measure inch by inch
how we grow away, but not by what sideways steps and indirections we find our way back. In the dinghy's shadow deep under our keel, old stalk-eyes
shift in their carapace, the planets wink, the sea's meniscus swells. An ox-bone swarming with worms, each one a galaxy,
glitters like the moon, and mud crabs - heavy, slow, ecstatic in their season - climb. Their end is certain. Under the moon, under the knuckle, my long skull falls
balding through centuries. And the ox-bone
shines, singing of space, the pale sun wintering in Cancer, a new star explodes out of the net.

There is not much time
left. I love them all, severally and in the largest honour that there is.

Girlfriends
The soft-spoken friendship between women is made of wistful reminiscing, is made of crisp, yellow confessions traced absently in sunlit dust.
It lives near children and must disguise its distinct nature and scent a little.
Under the table and linen and teacups it hides a sweetness no one may see.
Close to a kitchen, a striking clock, and close to the husband's taut net of veins, close to the husband himself, his heartbeat, his deep-rooted expectation day and night -
this friendship, ardent and unspoken, can only vibrate like a poem carrying between its lines a want the poet has never called by name.

What is that cross? said Camier.
There they go again.
Planted in the bog, not far from the road, but too far for the inscription to be visible, a plain cross stood.
I once knew, said Mercier, but no longer.
I too once knew, said Camier, I'm almost sure.
But he was not quite sure.
It was the grave of a nationalist, brought here in the night by the enemy and executed, or perhaps only the corpse brought here, to be dumped. He was buried long after, with a minimum of formality. His name was Masse, perhaps Massey. No great store was set by him now, in patriotic circles. It was true he had done little for the cause. But he still had this monument. All that, and no doubt much more, Mercier and perhaps Camier had once known, and all forgotten.
How aggravating, said Camier.
Would you like to go and look? said Mercier.
And you? said Camier.
As you please, said Mercier.
