I need to connect w/ Portland OR queer & trans activists. Next week, a conservative, "gender critical" anti-trans activist named Zander Keig will be speaking on a trans elder panel he organized at Bold Coffee. He uses community events like this to pinkwash his associations w/ transphobic hategroups.

I appreciate that my friend took this picture of it upside down. She's a potter, so that's why. I enjoy leaving the very bottom of vessels rougher & less touched. I also try for a legible signature vs a fancy looking one, which is a choice that probably betrays something about me. #ceramics #pottery

Round-ish underside of a large stoneware vessel. It's flat enough to stand upright though because the last thing that I do before signing is to flatten the bottom and to make sure there's no sharp bits. Since it is upside down in this photo, the rim of the piece is resting on a circular blue mat on a wooden dining room table. I've been enjoying leaving the very bottom of pieces slightly rougher and less touched, so there's some divets, lines and flat spots there. My signature and shelf number were carved into the bottom with a pencil. I try for a legible signature vs a fancy looking one, which is a choice that probably betrays something about me.

A large double spouted stoneware vessel that I sold to a good friend. This is her photo from her dining room table. I put a lot of myself into this piece and was glad that my friend connected with that. #ceramics #pottery

Large (reclaimed but mostly red clay) stoneware vessel with two very wide, opposing spouts of different sizes and a gently waving rim. The piece is curvy and flowing and has some small "wrinkles" where edges meet. It also includes a central wall that is not continuous to the bottom, so it's basically like an interior rim or maybe an unrefined handle. The interior surface of the piece has a stark white glazed surface and the exterior is mostly stained with rutile which gives it a golden color with lots of variation on the red clay body even in an oxidation firing.

A large vase that I sold a couple of weeks ago. It was an experiment in pushing the clay and I'm calling it a maximal piece. #ceramics #pottery

Large, stoneware vase that has an undulating, human-like form. It was a coil built piece and is covered in a translucent light bluegreen glaze. The rim is a golden brown color. The vase is filled with a large bouquet of yellow and pink flowers with tall stems that have large lanceolate leaves.

It was a challenge, but I made 8 plates that are stackable (6 shown here). The person who commissioned them is very happy with them. I made 2 of the larger plates with the extra flare on the rim. The other one just came out the kiln, so it is not shown here. #ceramics #pottery

2 stacks of 3 plates each. They vary slightly in size but stack well. The rims were made with a gentle, bowl-like curve. The bigger plate on the bottom right has an extra outward flare on the rim. I made another one like this plate, but it is not pictured here.

Most of the surfaces are covered by a cream colored glaze with rusty red flecks that show through and originate from the clay body. A translucent, mint green colored glaze was brushed on the rim of each plate. The rim glazing shows some minor dripping and variation in thickness.

This small bas relief was a commissioned piece. #ceramics #sculpture

Small 4x4 inch tile with a relief carving of a dog laying in a thick, round bed. The dog is facing us and its paws are crossed in front. It was made with a mix of stoneware clays and stained with a thick application of iron oxide which varies in color from a steel blue to a dark rusty red. The bed and dog are highly textured and the background is smooth.

Yeah, it happens. Sometimes clay or ceramic vessels break. This one was on the dry side of leatherhard and I pressed it too much when I was removing it from the wheelhead after trimming. Well at least I don't have to glaze it!

Small red stoneware clay bowl with a thin wall. The bowl is missing a part of the wall and bits of it are seen on top of lumps of a whiter clay that I'd used to adhere the bowl to the metal wheelhead below it.

Asymmetrical, round-bodied, double spouted ceramic vessel with a lot of surface texture. The interior and spout lips are glazed white and most of the outer body is glazed with a glossy, dark reddish brown glaze. There are striations all over the inside and outside of the piece.

Large pinchpot bowl. #ceramics #pottery

Large pinchpot bowl with a wavy rim. The lower part of the bowl is very round and smooth and nearer to the rim there is asymmetry and fingermarks. The liner glaze is white with some significant spillage over the rim. A green translucent glaze was poured over the outside surface leaving some spots of bare red clay.

Large pitcher without a handle. This piece has an undulating surface, was handbuilt with coils, and fired to cone 6. Most of the piece is a rusty red from iron oxide with a white liner glaze inside and on the lip. Rutile was added as a gold-colored transition in between.

Tall, coil-built vase. Red stoneware with an application of rutile on the outside and a matte butterscotch-colored glaze on the inside. The surface has variations in color from tan to gold. The vertical lineations were made by paddling the surface.

Small pitcher or creamer. Red clay body with a translucent green glaze overall plus a white liner glaze that is also dripping out from the rim and wrapping around the body toward the handle. The pitcher has a very round shape and an altered "throat" area starting near the foot area and ending at the spout.

Unfortunately these are headed for the dumpster. Two have cracks that are my fault and two were cracked by whomever loaded them into the bisque firing. I'm still making other pitchers and I might try a smaller and more crenulated version of the large vase. #ceramics #pottery

I've mostly been handbuilding lately, but a couple of days ago I used a potter's wheel and made some small pitchers or creamers. These are drying out for a bisque fire. #ceramics #pottery

Four small (<2lb), red clay pitchers on top of a wooden board. The handles are facing inward to protect them from being bumped. Besides forming the spout, I also altered the bodies of each vessel to shape a sort of throat. There's a loop tool and some clay shavings at the bottom right of the photo.

Tile-sized maquette of a comfort gesture of a friend of mine. #ceramics #sculpture

Highly textured, tile-sized bas relief of a woman crossing her arms in front of herself with her hands holding her opposite shoulders. Some exaggerated details such as muscles and folds in the throat and upper chest area are more abstract and less representative of a human form.

This piece was made with a red stoneware and has a surface of iron oxide staining, so the color varies from a dark steel blue color in the recesses to a dark rusty red over most of the piece.

Every piece is a test. I used a white stoneware for this maquette. I didn't like how the iron oxide looked on it, so I fired it again with some rutile and mason stains. The mason stains mostly burned off, but idk if it's from the interaction with the oxides, the firing, or the stains themselves.

Around the eye and nostril there is some light blue mason stain, but it's mostly an overly saturated golden color (from rutile) with some reddish iron oxide underneath. A pink/light red mason stain completely burned off and is not visible.

I'm trying to bring the inside to the outside, but sometimes I still prefer the inside parts that remain churning. And I like how this white liner glaze breaks a little bit on red clay.

Inside view of a coil-built vase. The white glaze is thinner on ridges in the clay which were made by mostly vertical tool marks as I consolidated the clay. These surprisingly evenly spaced marks are at right angles to the coiling of the clay.

I've been making some vessels lately. I find that it's a good break from sculpture. Coil-built stoneware with a white liner glaze and a translucent, celadon-like outer glaze, fired to cone 6. I enjoyed altering this with finger and thumb marks at various stages of dryness. #ceramic #pottery

12 inch tall vase with a 4 inch wide mouth. The inner glaze is white with a glossy, light blue-green, translucent glaze on the outside of the pot. I purposefully pushed out the wall with my fingers and left thumb marks on the rim. There's some pooling of the green glaze in these divets.

Instead of taking a hammer to this pot, I'll raku it. Ha! Apparently, I sprayed it too much and there was probably some pooling of water on the inside, so it developed S type cracking on the bottom when bisqued. Whatever...raku-ing it will be fun! #ceramic #pottery

I often prefer the look of the bottoms or foot areas of vessels. Whenever I pick up a piece, that's where I look first.
