I'm visiting Chicago for a couple of days, and had the good fortune to check out the National Public Housing Museum today. It's in the one remaining building from the Jane Addams Houses (built in 1938). The staff are amazing -- can't recommend it highly enough.

Made it to the Missouri Historical Society for the final day of the fantastic Mill Creek: Black Metropolis exhibition. Mill Creek Valley in STL was a thriving Black community that experienced dispossession and displacement due to urban renewal in the late 1950s. Huge props to the curators.

"The swift growth of commercial broadcast television in the United States during the early years of the Cold War, and its rapid instantiation into practically all aspects of social consciousness, came to epitomize capitalist media in the epoch that Michael Denning has characterized as the 'age of three worlds.' In no other national setting during the 1950s and the 1960s was the new medium so wholly instrumentalized to propagate the cultural hegemony of consumer capitalism. The large broadcasting firms that had already established their dominance over radio in the US prior to the Second World War leveraged their market power at war’s end to launch national television networks on the same for-profit, commercial model, with advertising furnishing all revenue, and advertising agencies and their clients exercising considerable influence over the production of programing..."
