The Light Pirate is a new all-time favorite for me. This story of a girl born during a hurricane is one of those books that you’ll keep thinking about long after reading (more in ALT). #BlueBrewBooks #books #reading

It’s set in a future Florida, where the land is losing its battle with the sea and everything begins to revert back to swampland. When Wanda is born, people are still in denial that their way of life could change, even as the coastlines creep toward highways and hurricanes become stronger and more frequent. As Wanda grows, her community shrinks when friends and neighbors trickle away and abandon Florida.

The beautiful writing style brings you right into the hearts and minds of the characters. I felt for and loved them all as they struggled to live their lives while everything slowly eroded around them. I especially loved the relationship between Wanda and Phyllis, an older neighbor with a science background. I enjoyed seeing Wanda grow stronger and more confident because of her relationship with Phyllis.

At times The Light Pirate made me think of Earth Abides by George R. Stewart, an old favorite. The stories and writing styles are completely different, but both show the resilience of the human spirit in an ever-changing world. Both also make you think about society and all we take for granted while questioning what’s truly important in life.
