Griffith’s rose! It’s a David Austin Lady of Shalott, and soooo pretty. He was also orange.
The rose we planted with our dog’s ashes is about to bloom for the first time. I think about him all the time still. I wonder how many local birds still have nests with his fur! He’s still out in the garden with us.

In Henri Estienne’s 1577 edition of Callimachus, he has a little preface before the section of stray fragments in which he compares what he has done to collecting things from a shipwreck. It reminded me of Amy Richlin reading Adrienne Rich’s poem “Diving into the Wreck” to me in grad school.

this is one of my favorite examples—Aldus’s edition of Gaza’s Greek grammar. Only the big Aldine Greek existed then and it didn’t fit on the line in the Latin preface, so in one spot he used an ugly older Greek and in another he left it blank and wrote it in by hand himself in every copy!!

I pre-ordered this Lady of Shalott bare root rose just after Griffith died last summer. We potted it up this morning with a little bit of his ashes, so he can still be in the garden with us.
It’s basically a pre-Columbian minestrone with sausage. The first time I made this, I was very doubtful about how good it would be—but it’s delicious! And interesting to taste something with flavors from before 1492.
It’s also got chickpeas and these sausages inspired by a recipe in Apicius. I just really make it up as I go, with the rule of no ingredients from the Americas! I use anchovy paste for garum.
