She scanned the garment bag, then handed it to him. “Would you like to check it first to make sure it’s to your standards?”
“I might as well,” he said with a shrug. He unzipped the bag and glanced at the patched knee.
“I did it by machine; I’m afraid I haven’t had time to do much handwork,” she said apologetically.
Procyon looked at her. “You mean you’ve been too busy doing the job you were actually hired for to live out some backwoods fantasy?”
“ Excuse me?”
“Isn’t that what this is, Roke? Moving up from the city for a slower paced life? I’m sure it sounded charming in your head.”
Zariah was speechless. It wasn’t as if he was entirely wrong; she had, after all, been looking for a change of pace. Still, there was no need for him to be so confrontational.
“You’re right, Procyon: I have been busy with the job I was hired for. And, seeing as our business is concluded and I have more work to do, perhaps you should be on your way.”

"How are your humidity levels?" Corbin asked. "I know your predecessor sometimes had trouble this time of year."
"They're actually not bad. I've had to make a few adjustments in the workroom, and, of course, it's hard to dry anything outside, but it's manageable."
Corbin nodded. "It's those spider plants. They're actually a new variety; we were able to get them early because some old friend of Procyon's engineered them."
Zariah forced herself to smile. "It's amazing how the right greenery can make such a difference." She sipped her coffee.
"I think he still has a few," Corbin added,
"and, if not, he could easily get more."
"I'll keep that in mind," Zariah said amicably. In truth, her previous
interactions with Kai Procyon had left her eager to avoid him, and she was sure that the feeling was mutual.

Rewild My Heart (A solarpunk romance novel) Zariah’s first day at her new job:

She was working on the stuffed grolar bear, making quarter-inch slip stitches to reattach the arm, when the front door beeped again. She glanced up at the monitor.
A man, about her own age, had entered the front room. He wore a short-sleeved tunic, a pair of close-fitting work pants, and an impatient expression. Zariah placed the toy on her work table and went out to greet him.
“You’re the new sewist?” he asked as soon as she was in the room.
“Yes: Zariah Roke. Can I help you?”
He pulled a pair of coveralls from the bag he was carrying. “I need these mended.”
Zariah raised her eyebrows. Everyone she had met so far, from the mayor to little Mariposa, had been eager to chat with her. She supposed it was silly to assume that everyone would be like that; after all, people were people, even in small towns. She could hardly resent the man for being less friendly than his neighbors.

I’m starting a solarpunk/eco-futurist romance novel, tentatively titled “Rewild My Heart,” so this prompt worked quite well. #WIPSnips #WritingPrompts

A group of potted saplings caught Zariah’s eye. She walked closer to them and saw, from the leaves, that they were oak trees, ranging in height from perhaps half a meter to slightly shorter than herself. Each pot was decorated with its own ScanCode.
“They’re a sort of side project of mine,” he explained. He pulled out his handheld.
“Here.” He showed her a picture of an older, larger oak surrounded by chunks of old concrete and asphalt.
“Is it from your time in the Wasteland?” she asked.

“Yes. In the zone where I was working, there was only one old oak tree left. We called it Mother Renaissance.” There was a strange reverence in his voice, very different from the practical, impatient botanical engineer she was getting to know.
“And those saplings are all…?
“From its acorns, yes. There were a few more, not counting the ones that didn’t make it, but they’ve been planted in the forest.”
“So you’ve been growing them since you moved here?”
“Yes. They don’t really take a lot of work as long as I only have a few going at a time.”
