The candidate was a black Christian with a name that sounded Arab & Muslim-- not a great fit for MAGA's prejudices. If he's surprised the leopards ate his face, he's also even dumber than the average Trumper.

He's not even self aware enough to do that. The guy has disparaged divorce using his grandparents as an example. Basically, he says his mom's divorces made for an unstable childhood for him, and his grandparents staying together provided him stability, so couples should always stay together.

On a serious note, this seems to be a thing in their era. Many of these extremely powerful guys look incredibly scraggly, which is impressive given that it's not like any picture was candid back then. Even the traitors were a mess, like the Confederate VP:

Unsurprisingly, when your denomination was forged by their support for slavery, they're not going to be great on racial *or* labor issues. To be clear, other denominations aren't perfect, but the difference is real & mappable. Scandinavians, of course, are mostly Lutheran.

I'm a little bummed they included Dr Jesse Lazear (second on their list) but didn't mention the guy and his method of death is depicted in a stained glass window in the National Cathedral in DC.

This has me thinking of this guy again, Werner Goldberg, a half-Jewish German whose photo was used as Nazi propaganda of the "ideal German soldier." He served in their army invading Poland, before being discharged over his ancestry. He & his father were the only survivors in his paternal family.

While all of these are good changes, I'm not sold on their explanatory power in that time range. Many of these factors hit later, & caused 20th century improvements. For example, In the mid1800s, pasteurization wasn't yet widespread (invented in the 1860s, not common for milk til the 1900s).
