Ricmorn nodded once, the faintest bob of his chin, as he let some of the tension in his shoulders ease up. “Sit, Hien — join us,” he said. His gaze flicked over to the empty cushion beside Silva, and the young lord followed the movement. “Forgive me for my brashness. It’s been… a long day for all of us."

Hien nodded, his stance shifting as his body relaxed. "No harm done, my friend."

"Besides, it’ll be easier to look after Silv with both of us watching over her, just in case anyone else decides to test their luck.”

“You say that as if I need babysitting and can’t fend for myself, Ricmorn,” Silva grumbled, frowning.

A soft rumble of laughter left the white mage as he regarded her. The sound was slightly rough around the edges. “And you say that as if you didn’t deserve to be looked after the second you walked into my heart, my dear. As if people can't care for your wellbeing.”

"He's right, Silva," Hien agreed as he slowly crossed over to them. "People can care about you." A small grunt left him as he carefully sat down, taking extra care not to spill the two bowls in his hands. "Be respectful."

Silva found herself too tired to argue with them otherwise, a pale lilac blush painting her cheeks.

"Speaking of caring…" The young lord placed the bowl of brown hearty stew in front of him before handing the other, filled with a paler broth, to Silva. He gave her a soft smile when confusion crossed her face. "I caught you stirring the stew more than eating it while I was getting mine, and had a feeling your stomach would like something lighter. This will do the trick."

"Oh!"

She blinked, sea-green eyes wide as Silva gently took the steaming bowl from him, the heat of the liquid seeping into her palms. The light herbal scent didn't make her stomach churn. Earthy. Comforting. If anything, her mouth was watering compared to when the other bowl was in front of her — she wanted to eat. Silva raised the bowl to her lips, taking shallow sips. Warmth and salt hit her tongue first. Notes of ginger, scallion, cinnamon, and a hint of something acidic — something close to a lemon but not — followed next, blending beautifully with the delicate fowl broth.

A happy, satisfied noise rumbled deep in her chest after the fourth swallow, pulling the bowl away from her mouth.

"Fuck— that is delicious," Silva half laughed. "I could eat three more servings before my belly screams from being full."

Hien chuckled, spooning some of his stew into his mouth before speaking. "It is, yes. I ate more than my fair share of it while I was healing from my wounds," he admitted. "Easy on the stomach, nourishing for the body." His peridot eyes softened. "Healing for the soul and heart that ached from grief, pain, and questions I wasn't ready to discover the answers to."

Grief, pain, and questions he would face in time. But not now.

Certainly not now — there were more important matters at hand and different fears to conquer.

Silva's gaze remained on Doma Castle as the Confederate ships sailed through the broken gates with no enemy to greet them, coming close enough to complete the final step of their plan. With their cannons aimed directly at their target, they fired. And in the waters below, the well-placed explosives set by the Kojin went off almost at the same time.

The once high crimson walls of the beloved castle didn't stand a chance, crumbling into pieces and into the One River's welcoming embrace, exposing the inner parts of the palace. Their opening was here.

Anxiety surged through Silva, adrenaline mixing with it as her aether buzzed in the surrounding air, ready for her call.

She wasn't ready. She wasn't ready for this. Ready for possibly failure and any of the people she held dear dying at her feet, and—

The circling thoughts died when Ricmorn's hand found hers, slipping his fingers through hers and gently squeezing her palm. Grounding. Offering a place for her fears and worries to go because she didn't have to carry them alone. A promise that he was here with her.

She squeezed his hand in return. Hard.

Because if she met his worried sky-blue eyes, Silva knew she wouldn't be able to hold her tears back. Now wasn't the time for her to cry.

And yet she nearly did so anyway when Hien shifted himself into her line of sight, setting a careful hand on her shoulder. Comforting. His skin was warm against hers — another layer of grounding. A second offer of silent support, if she needed it.

She took it without question.

"Are you ready, Silva?" he asked, concerned eyes watching for the faintest change in her expression. Watery sea-green eyes stared back at him, full of emotion. Full of thoughts she wanted or couldn't say. Hien understood the feeling all too well as he brushed his thumb against her light blue-gray skin. "I know how much this is asking of you. The emotions, thoughts, and memories it brings — positive or negative or somewhere caught between. You're not alone."

"No," was Ricmorn's rumbled agreement. "You're not — far from it."

Silva let out a shuddering breath, and then another, taking their affirmations and care and using them to steel herself. Reminding herself of the truth held within their words and gestures as the rest of their group moved and gathered their supplies around them. And gods and kami bless them both; it worked. While not all of her anxiety fled from her blood, she was stable enough to tune it out.

To focus her emotions on the battle ahead and keep her wits about her without getting herself or anyone else hurt or killed.

She took one last deep breath before nodding, determination lighting up her face.

"I'm ready," Silva said, ready this time. And then softer — just for Hien and Ricmorn alone. "Thank you."

Hien raised an eyebrow at that. The awe in Silva's soft words. The way his remark seemed to settle over Ricmorn in a way that made him loosen his protective stance enough, telling the young lord that he was surprised, too. Empathy washed over him. "Truly? Then those people don't understand what it's like to lose something or someone precious. How terrible it is to lose a part of themselves." His voice fell when he spoke again, a low ache blooming in his chest. "How it changes you — for better or worse."

And how one makes a promise to themselves to never let it happen again.

"We remember," was Silva's whisper.

He nodded. "We do."

A pause, long enough for the heavy moment to nearly settle.

The young lord's gaze flicked from Silva, the empty space on the ground to her left for him to sit, and then returned to her. "Would it be fine if I—"

Hien's body shifted slightly before he could finish the question — for permission. A mere accident. Ricmorn's instinct kicked in before his mind could, sky-blue eyes narrowing as another ragged sound tore through his chest, tail thumping loudly behind him. Hien froze again, giving his friend the space and time to forgive the mistake. But instead of fear carved into his expression, it was worry.

"[I won't hurt her,]" Hien promised, speaking calmly in Doman — a way to offer some privacy if either he or the small Au Ra beside him needed it. "[I would never.]"

Words that were just meant for the three of them.

The reassurance struck a chord in Ricmorn. Truth wrapped in care. He knew Hien spoke with honesty, that he was sincere. But he couldn't stop the growl scraping against his vocal cords as the shadows in the corner of his mind flickered with life again.

"Do you believe him?" Esteem whispered, sending an icy chill down his spine.

He did.

He believed it before the memory of Hien pulling Silva away from the young man who grabbed her and placing her behind him cut through him. How the young lord did it without second thought.

Ricmorn aimed the belief at the darker version of himself and set the arrow free. Esteem remained silent, choosing to watch instead.

To respect the line that was drawn — for once.

Challenge flashed in Hien's eyes. He took one step toward the grand staircase, the wooden banister creaking as his left hand curled around it. And that was— fuck. What she would give for that hand to curve around a leg, thigh, waist, her fucking throat— “Wicked woman. You know I’m always up for the chase,” he murmured sweetly. Hien’s lips twisted into a wicked smirk when she retreated up another step. A delirious laugh threatened to climb up her throat. The sound came out as a rough scoff instead.

"Who says I want to walk at all tomorrow?" she countered, waves of heat crawling under her skin and scales. Silva backed up another step, just as Hien took the first. "Who says there's somewhere else I need to be, when there's only one place I truly long for?"

"Then I suggest you still run, darling. After all, I'm not the only one chasing after you."

The second Hien finished speaking, deep, rumbling laughter from the floor above them echoed along the stone walls, almost as if the third person in this game of theirs was waiting for his introduction. And Silva knew who owned the sound that never failed to sink into her bones and made her heart do stupid things in her chest.

Ricmorn. He was already ahead of both of them and was waiting to catch her somewhere above them.

"Fuck," she swore under her breath.

She needed to climb these blasted stone steps before both men pinned her in a corner.

It was several days after she fled from the Rising Stones to get some space from her friends — in no mood to continue the spat she found herself getting wrapped up in. (For a very good reason.) The young lord offered for her to stay in his home, and Ricmorn convinced her to stay in Doma for a week to cool off. So she did. Hien sought her out on her final night at the Enclave and asked if she would join him for a late dinner, where they talked for bells on end in the cool night air, away from any wandering, prying eyes.

Where they could be themselves, undisturbed.

Laughter filled the air as they exchanged wide smiles and heartfelt stories from their pasts. Bright and open. Shared things that many close to them didn't know. Every other sentence held curiosity and mild flirtation that grew bolder as the minutes passed. They asked questions they were brave enough to ask without being surrounded by nosy company because it was easy to be together. Because it was easy to be carefree for once without expectations.

It was always easy. It just never really settled into her mind until then.

Hien had made sure she ate her fill and didn't go to bed hungry. He made sure her cup of herbal tea, and sake, when the young lord broke a bottle out for them to share, always stayed full — never empty. "I really never thought that I would get to see this again — Doma under a night sky. Free of fear and terror. The stars here are so beautiful," she said to him after a few moments, her lips turning up into a small smile.

"They are," Hien agreed, peridot eyes meeting sea-green ones as he turned to look at her. His voice fell to a murmur, but the intention it held was loud and clear to her ivory horns. "Just like you, Silva."

Just like you, Silva.

The words left their mark as they stared at one another. Something shifted in the quiet between them that was as strong as the ocean tide itself, exciting and quick and breathtaking all in one. But neither of them spoke about it. Neither said anything nor gave it a name. They simply let it be, with the silent promise to pick it up another time when their minds were clearer and the need for rest didn't weigh on them.

He guided her to her room after that and opened his arms to her when she requested a hug before parting. Hien held Silva carefully, but his arms tightened around her when she wasn't ready to let go— when she buried her face into the crook of his neck after tenderly nuzzling one of her horns against his cheek. A gesture that screamed she felt safe with him, and that she deeply cared for him. That he was someone very special to her.

They both found it difficult parting ways once the embrace broke, but they left one another with much strength and grace and the promise of seeing her off in the morning.

If he had a remark about it, he didn't get a chance to speak up as the woman between them beat him to it.

"Fun fact…" Silva started, a smile lighting up her face as her tail swished again. "Ricmorn has a matching bracelet, too. One I made of rose and clear quartz beads with small silver disc-like spacers between them."

Clear quartz, because it reminded her of the color of his hair, his porcelain skin, and the ornate healer robes he wore. It reminded her of the time Ricmorn first kissed her in the snow because she'd never seen it before, and the look of pure wonder on her face touched his heart and caused him to act before thinking. Pink quartz for the way his cheeks would flush when embarrassed. For the times her lipstick stained his lips, skin, collarbone, and the neckline of his clothes.

But she didn't need to say those things aloud. Not when Ricmorn already knew them.

Hien blinked, his gaze shifting between the Auri couple. A soft chuckle escaped him. "Does he now?" he mused. "I don't think I've ever seen him wear it."

"I do, yes. Trust me," Ricmorn said, already raising his right arm and reaching to pull back the long sleeves of his healer robes. His fingers lifted the black and white fabric to reveal a bracelet just as Silva described. Gloved fingertips ran over the smooth white and pink beads, over shiny silver discs with black grooves — other than the beads being different colors, their bracelets matched. (Though Silva's technique outmatched the one he made for her. But that mattered little to her.) "'Tis always on, just hidden in plain sight. But I show it off from time to time when it matters." He avoided looking directly at anyone when he continued, a light shade of pink dusting his pale cheeks. "I… also don't like being without it. I don't feel like myself if it's not on or in a pocket where it's safe. The bracelet also helps keep me sane whenever Silv and I have to spend time apart to train with our teachers or when duty demands it."

"Glad it's not just me," Silva said as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "I don't like being the odd one all the time."

Anyway, hello, hi, yes!!! I'm back into longfic writing again, and letting myself enjoy the sweet, little moments between Hien, Silva, and Ricmorn before writing out Doma Castle dungeon/fight bits. They are too cute together ;-; (PLEASE note this is very rough and may change later on) #silvawrites

Hien's gaze shifted from Silva's face to the bracelet on her right wrist — the one she'd been playing with moments ago. It wasn't the first time he had seen it. (The young lord didn't think she ever took it off, either. Not since he's known her.) Nor was it the first time he caught Silva playing with it, whether out of habit or nerves or done without her intentionally thinking about it. But it was clear to him that she loved the bracelet. How important it was to her. (He'd seen her smile fondly at the accessory more times than he could count.) The soft clack of the smooth blue-green beads — that Hien now realized almost matched the shade of her eyes — reached his ears, a sign Silva was playing with them again.

"It's beautiful," Hien murmured, a soft smile playing at his lips.

"Huh?

Silva watched him gesture to her right wrist, nodding when she tapped the blue-green jasper beads in a silent question. "The bracelet — it's beautiful. You always keep it with you."

"Oh!" Silva laughed. Her long tail swished behind her several times before she forced it to still. "Yes! Thank you! Other than my Mama's ring, this is the only piece of jewelry I own that I have with me or close to me at all times. Otherwise, I feel naked as my Nameday without it. It's like part of me is missing. It feels… wrong."

Warm curiosity flickered across his face. Hien was right. “Is its meaning significant?”

Deep, rumbling laughter filled the air.

“I’d hope it is, considering I made that bracelet for her,” Ricmorn said as he joined the Doman pair, his beige-scaled tail swishing as Silva rolled her eyes.

"You say that as if you don't know I wear it every single day," she grumbled, warmth blooming across her cheeks, but he only chuckled again. The look of fondness he gave her told Silva he knew.

The blush staining her skin deepened when Hien joined in on Ricmorn's amusement.

"So very important to have with you, then," Hien said, understanding better now. "No wonder you keep it close."

He nodded to the young lord before gazing down at his wife. “It’s a courtship gift — the first gift I ever made for Silva, actually," Ricmorn explained. "Though the bands are made of woven threads and not beads, it’s a tradition in Thavnair that one gives to a lover as a sign of devotion and protection. A promise woven together with colorful threads. And that… stuck with me. I couldn’t get my hands on Hannish cotton at the time, so I used what I had on hand instead.”

What Ricmorn didn't say was that he spent weeks designing the bracelet and gathering the materials. That he crafted each blue-green jasper bead and the sterling silver spacers by hand. He did that while hoping Silva would return to Eorzea, and they could fix the complicated mess between them and be together. So they could start a relationship on solid ground.

Even if he did silently fear that they would never get that chance.

But she returned after six long months of almost no contact. They slowly talked things out. They found their footing.

The Auri man never forgot the wave of relief and renewed hope that washed over him the moment Silva displayed the bracelet to him that night on the beach. The promises they swore to each other under the starry heavens. That moment is what he held onto.

In the end, they both kept their promises.

"You wanted to show Silva the depth of your care and love," Hien remarked after letting the Auri man's thoughts sit and settle. The heavy weight of emotion they held was profound. It was vulnerability and strength wrapped together into one condensed object. "I've heard of that tradition and knew those from Thavnair don't speak of it lightly, so for you to try in your own way to uphold it is… extraordinary. That is love expressed in a way not many would understand."

The thought made the young lord's chest ache, even in its truth.

Silva laughed this time, a bright burst of giggles that she was sure gained the attention of the rest of their party behind them. "That it does, Hien! You're quite wise for that thinking."

He dismissed her simple praise, feeling heat crawl up his neck. "Wise, perhaps. I see it as me starting to figure the two of you out better without feeling like I'm prying or intruding into a place I'm not welcome."

"Doesn't make what you said any less meaningful or truthful, my friend," Ricmorn said. "I agree with her."

"I—" Hien paused, unsure what to say. He wasn't used to Ricmorn stating compliments easily — not without grumbling about it first or being pressured. It was how the young lord knew he was speaking honestly. "Thank you — both of you."

And then he gestured to Silva's right wrist again, eyeing the pretty spheres that matched the color of her eyes.

"You said you made it for her, Ricmorn?"

Ricmorn shifted his weight from one foot to the other, a faint rumble vibrating in his chest. "Aye. It's certainly not my best work as a craftsman — the bracelet. If you asked me to make it again, it would be a completely different piece of jewelry. It would have a different message," he admitted. "The message that piece of work holds is… exactly what it needs to be. I wouldn't change it." He froze when silent intrigue flickered in Hien's eyes. Oh, that— That was far too personal for his liking — too close to an old wound he didn't like discussing openly. The white mage shoved the thought aside and spoke before his friend gained the courage to dig deeper into his mind. "Besides, I was told gifts from the heart hold more intention than those hastily thought of or put together. That they could say the right words when you don't know them." His gaze softened, the corner of his mouth lifting into a smile. Ricmorn held Silva's bright gaze. "Especially when it comes to a certain someone here."

Butterflies fluttered in her belly at the honest admiration in her husband's words, the feeling overshadowing her pre-battle anxiety.

"Silly man," Silva mumbled. But she was smiling as she shook her head. "Silly, silly man. It is one of my most priceless treasures, and it will always be precious to me. There is so much heart and soul put into it. So much…"

She trailed off, unable to find the words for the emotions swirling within her. Love. Hope. Joy. Laughter. Promises of forever and more. That it was safe to be human with someone else who also struggled with separating self from duty.
