I believe this is in reference to a conspiracy theory that says the Sphinx's head is "out of scale" with the rest of the sculpture and that it originally was a depiction of Anubis.
My best guess would be that they were the earliest form of chicken one could reasonably eat with their hands; unlike the chicken one might eat with a knife and fork on at the dinner table, this is finger food chicken, chicken for fingers, chicken fingers.

This line in Mass Effect 3 has always bugged the heck out of me. The pawns in a chess game aren't equivalent to Krogans, if anything they're humans; *rooks* are Krogans, bishops are Turians, knights are Salarians, queens are Asari, kings are Quarians, and I feel like this is all really obvious!
