Books and cats and cooking and tea and open-wheel motor racing.
I was not a Daft Punk or even an EDM fan before this album, but after I heard it for the first time, I bought a copy and listened to it for 11 months straight. The robot-human dichotomy felt so relevant, even back then.
Here are my buds. They started sleeping in those spots when I was camped out on the sofa, recovering from a broken foot. One would sleep on my chest and the other would sit on the back of the sofa, keeping watch. I'm now ambulatory, but they're still manning their stations. I love them so much 🐈⬛🐈
I'm off from work today, so get to eat lunch from an actual plate! A riff on Good Earth's roast carrot & black bean pâté, made with red lentils instead of the beans, plus brown rice sourdough crackers and dairy-free Borsin, spinach, and broccoli baked in Schar pastry.
I'm easily amused by food science, but aquafaba tricks are my favorite. (Aquafaba meringues from the Vegan for Everyone cookbook by America's Test Kitchen)
Have read decidedly mixed reviews of Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, so much so that I've been lured in to make a judgment for myself. Let's see where this goes. #booksky
There should be a German word for that feeling where your allergies are awful and you have to work all weekend, but Bring Me the Horizon just released a new song, so it's not all bad.
Bought some bulk bin Assam with enough astringency to burn a hole in my stomach lining. I usually don't care for additives in tea, but have to temper this one. My mom bought some mid lollipops a while ago, so I've started stirring them in. It's definitely a tea sin, but a delicious one. #teasky
This is a depressing one for sure, but well-written and relatable. And, I know it's stylist to shit on audiobooks, but Dion Graham's narration is lovely and engaging and makes me want to listen to everything he's read. #booksky
I enjoy exploring different cultures' takes on "traditional" foods. Today, I decided to try a British interpretation of corn bread. It's pretty much cake. Delicious cake. As someone who loves cake, score. As someone who grew up south of the Mason-Dixon Line, disturbing.
Received a tub of unwanted virgin coconut oil and had leftover coconut milk, so threw together #vegan coconut French toast with the usual spices and toasted coconut on gluten-free sourdough. I experimented with using a combination of aquafaba and a chickpea flour "egg" in the batter. 10/10
Made a mostly found objects salad: surplus romaine and spinach from my dad's CSA swap, heavily discounted green onions, leftover vinaigrette, and toasted nuts/seeds/sourdough breadcrumbs from storage. I also bought blueberries to round it out, but at least they were wholesale price. Yay plants.
When I first prepared this soup last fall, I knew it was fated to end up in a bread bowl. So, for my birthday, that's exactly what I did. Homemade sourdough and cheezy vegetable chowder, all gluten-free and vegan.
Now that I'm off crutches and can walk a bit, I'm back up to my #PokemonGo nonsense. If you'd like to exchange gifts, trade, or go raiding, my trainer code is 594056118909
I try to squeeze in a best seller here and there, partially for work-related purposes and partially because I like being able to discuss/recommend books without making people's eyes glaze over. After a few esoteric novellas, it's that time. I've heard good things about this one! #booksky
I rolled the dice and blind caked a few teas from King Tea Mall. Probably a dumb move, but I've enjoyed everything so far. This one's floral and woody and has a depth I wasn't expecting. It reminds me of a forest after an April shower, but not in a puerh-y way. #teasky
I've been putting A Little Life off for years because I'm easily upset, but the time has come. Put in about two hours so far and haven't cried yet, but holy wow the use of light and texture in this book is beautiful. #booksky
Entering week six of life on crutches and antsy to get back into the kitchen. The meal delivery service I'm using is...fine, but I miss making homemade cake, soup, sourdough, and so much more. Can't wait for PT so I have the strength to lift my Dutch oven again 😭
Mate cocido and Bob's Burgers, work your relaxation magic 💆♀️ #teasky
Been drinking lots of Blossoms of Health herbal "tea" from Mountain Rose Herbs lately, since too much caffeine makes The Horrors seem even worse. The tea's health claims are surely bullshit, but the flowers are purdy and the infusion tastes like a lovely spring day 🌷 #teasky
Ever since I broke my foot, these buds have been working overtime, keeping me company and reminding me to elevate my leg. Maybelle sits or lays on me and Papa monitors the situation from above, on the back of the sofa 🥰 #catsofbluesky
Used up a bunch of pantry odds and ends to make scones based off of ATK's Vegan for Everybody recipe. I have to eat gluten-free; most of my bakes look pretty normal, but these scones always look sad, despite tasting great. This time, I added a maple drizzle to jazz 'em up a bit.
Last week, I broke open my first Crimson Lotus cake: 2019's Feist. It has that fruity, lush zip I love in younger shengs, but it's so damn caffeinated that I have to brew it weak. (I average around 10g for a large mug of tea, but only use 4g of this one!) #teasky
I managed to fuck up just about every step of making #sourdough focaccia. It's a forgiving recipe and turned out okay-ish all the same. Someday, I'll move past adding a simple rosemary and salt topping, but not today.
Recently been drinking at least one chunk of Mengku Pure Aroma a day. It was a freebie from Yunnan Sourcing, but I would happily pay for another cake. It's straightforward, clean (not fishy or overly funky), and forgiving to brew. Would be a nice entry-level ripe. #teasky
Santa brought me an electric kettle with a built-in thermometer and it is such a friggin game-changer. It turns out I was guesstimating brew temps far too low. The difference is most noticeable with mate cocido, but I'm sure it will vastly improve spring green teas too. Thanks, Santa! #teasky
First batch of lasagna since Miyoko's liquidated. Instead, I used Follow Your Heart parm, Daiya mutz, and a combo of Kite Hill and tofu ricotta. It came out great, if you don't factor in the fumble I made while plating. Dijon-dressed salad, gochujang garlic bread, and mixed olives on the side.
Woke up early to bake bread that proofed in the refrigerator overnight. Sipping Nilgiri "candy needles" white tea from Ketlee while waiting on the first boule. The tea is finicky to brew, but rewardingly floral and yeasty when I get it right. #teasky
