Also a shame to see GTA6 bail on its opportunity to create a cultural moment for fans by giving retail shops a physical copy of the game with the damn game instead of just a download code. Surely it's not that important to deal with broken street dates when you're going to make a trillion anyway.

Very funny that the follow-up is Hamaguchi saying that this is the opposite of how things were at Square Enix where the whole team would just get disbanded after each project.

Excerpt from the interview.

"Interviewer: Do you think that’s a lesson to other projects within Square Enix, to try to keep the team together?

Hamaguchi: I actually never had that idea before. In general, most development teams within Square Enix would just disband after a title. When we started on the next project, we’d start over again with the process of gathering necessary development members and figuring out what roles they will fill. The only exception is probably the Final Fantasy XIV team led by Naoki Yoshida — that’s a huge team that’s been working on multiple expansions — and the Remake series led by me.

I think it’s something that we should be mindful of as a company, as we go into titles we work on in the future. Because this did bring out a really huge benefit in terms of speeding up and having an efficient development timeline."

Not hard to see why Paul Graham nuked the Altman story from his digital safe space at Hacker News: the article's revelation about Altman's time as president of Y Combinator is nuts:

"Altman’s new role made him, at twenty-eight, a kingmaker. His job was to select the hungriest and most promising entrepreneurs, connect them with the best coders and investors, and help them develop their startups into industry-defining monopolies (while Y.C. took a six- or seven-per-cent cut). Altman oversaw a period of aggressive expansion, growing Y.C.’s roster of startups from dozens to hundreds. But several Silicon Valley investors came to believe that his loyalties were divided. An investor told us that Altman was known to “make personal investments, selectively, into the best companies, blocking outside investors.” (Altman denies blocking anyone.) Altman had worked as a “scout” for the investment fund Sequoia Capital, as part of a program that involved investing in early-stage startups and taking a small cut of any profits. When Altman made an angel investment in Stripe, a financial-services startup, he insisted on a bigger portion, galling Sequoia’s partners, a person familiar with the deal said. The person added, “It’s a policy of ‘Sam first.’ ” Altman is an investor in, by his own estimate, some four hundred other companies. (Altman denies this characterization of the Stripe deal.
