It's day 28 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth which also means it's #MenstrualHygieneDay, which was started by German NGO ‘WASH United’ back in 2013. So happy MH Day, folks! Today we're asking: what do haircuts, bungee jumping and alcohol have in common with periods? #PeriodFriendlyWorld 1/11
It's just another reminder of how badly/little research is done on period products. We're trying to change that for menstrual cups and discs. 8/10 #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth #PeriodFriendlyWorld
Working in partnership with affected communities, Reemi developed a kit that includes fast-drying period underwear, a waterproof wash bag, and a drying bag. It gives women a reliable period product they can wash and dry in private. 6/9 #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth #PeriodFriendlyWorld
It's day 23 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today we're switching focus from period products to using no products at all. It's free bleeding and the free bleeding movement. 1/7 #PeriodFriendlyWorld
The big issue here with disposable period products containing plastics is that plastics take an estimated 500 to 800 years to decompose. 8/10 #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth #PeriodFriendlyWorld
In terms of the sheer amount of period waste produced, I've seen figures of 11 to 45 billion for the number of period products disposed of worldwide each year. Here in Aotearoa, it's around 350 million. Most of this waste goes to landfill or is incinerated. 5/10 #PeriodFriendlyWorld
It's day 20 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today we're taking a look at the history of menstrual cups and discs. While they feel like a relatively new invention, as we covered yesterday, the first patent dates back to 1867! 1/16 #PeriodFriendlyWorld
It's day 19 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today we're taking a look back at some of the period products used over the centuries. 1/9 #PeriodFriendlyWorld
It's day 18 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today we're talking menstrual/period products, physical products used to absorb or collect period blood/menses. 1/ #PeriodFriendlyWorld

It's day 16 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and our topic is #MenstrualLeave, a form of leave which allows employees to take paid or unpaid time-off work, or to work flexibly, for menstruation or menopause related symptoms. Importantly, this leave is on top of regular sick leave. 1/6
And yesterday, day 14, we covered the important news that the misleading Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has just been renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This one got a bit personal. bsky.app/profile/siou... 7/9 #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth #PeriodFriendlyWorld

May is #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth and I've been trying to post something about menstrual health every day. Today is day 15, so here's a thread recapping what we've covered this week. #PeriodFriendlyWorld 1/9
Even taking the mid-estimate, to put it in context for NZ, that's about 120,000 people, which is nearly the population of Dunedin! #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth #PeriodFriendlyWorld 10/11
Now, multiplying by the average number of days menstruating per cycle (5) gives us 1,950 days. That's over FIVE YEARS spent bleeding, on average! And that is why good menstrual health is so important, and we should all be fighting for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld 8/8 #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth
The average cycle length is 28 days, and there are 365 days in the year, so that makes c 365/28, which is 13. So, (33 - 3) x 13 gives us 390 periods over a lifetime. So not far off that figure in the Lancet. 7/8 #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth #PeriodFriendlyWorld
Not a medical term as such, but given that not all people who menstruate identify as girls and women, menstruator is a good gender-neutral term that also includes trans men and boys, nonbinary, and intersex individuals who experience periods. #PeriodFriendlyWorld #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth 4/6
It's day 5 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today we're talking technical. Here are some important medical terms related to periods... #PeriodFriendlyWorld 1/6
Nearly 90,000 people from 190 countries responded, revealing more than 5,000 euphemisms! I haven't been able to find the whole list online, but Clue posted a few on their website, and we can see some themes emerging... 5/16 #PeriodFriendlyWorld #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth
And the word most often used, ikura, comes from the phrase “Mai-i-Kurawaka” referring to the origins of menstrual blood from Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother. 3/16 #PeriodFriendlyWorld #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth
It's day 4 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today we ask: what do you call your period? Here are just a few of the English euphemisms I found online. Time of the month. Shark week. Having the painters in. A visit from Aunt Flo. Surfing the crimson wave. Code red. #PeriodFriendlyWorld 1/16
It's day 3 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, so let's talk numbers. How many people do you think are affected by Menstrual Health? 1/10 #PeriodFriendlyWorld
