A once keen birder and temporary Fair Isle resident in a previous life. Now just mostly obsessed with moths (Staffordshire VC39). Update Ordnance Survey data for a living.
From FB, a potentially homegrown EBS, Steve! Looks very dark & fresh. @stevenash71.bsky.social
I can present evidence for inspection if you like? 😆😉 I find it more than strange tbh.
Another nice micro added to the garden list from last night, with this Bactra furfurana (Marsh Lance). Very few VC records. #Teammoth
60 odd species from one trap last night. A few decent micros, and it seems I can expect at least one SMW from every session at the moment! #Teammoth
Last night’s Acrobasis tumidana performed beautifully out of pot. Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs (VC39) #Teammoth
Highlight from the traps this morning was Acrobasis tumidana, which is a likely first for VC39. Other migrant interest provided by NFY Bordered Straw, and a seemingly endless supply of Small Mottled Willows! Only 210 LYUs 😅 @vc39moths.bsky.social #Teammoth
This morning’s traps pulverised by 330+ LYUs 😅🙈 45 BBYUs was equally ridiculous. ‘Not an underwing’ included Dot Moth, Vapourer, Black Arches, 2 Suspected, 2 True Lover’s Knot, 3 Blackneck, 3 White Satin & 4 Small Mottled Willow! #Teammoth
Hi Rob, a few queries from me if you don’t mind. 1. Are these cones on Field Maple likely to be the work of C.semifascia? I’ve kept hold of them but nothing emerged yet. 2. Are these mines on Hawthorn ok for S.crataegella? 3&4. L.malifoliella on Hawthorn? Thanks @vc28nature.bsky.social
Forgot to say I did eventually get a photo of this 🙄 What an absolute swine 😄 #Teammoth
Very busy traps 🥵 100+ species with another Small Marbled the highlight. Also 9 Small Mottled Willow, Pine Hawk, Suspected & Large Twin-spot Carpet. Record counts of 23 BBYU & 10 Cloaked Minor. Micros included C.paludella, L.phragmitella, 4 species of Ypsolopha and a prob M.obviella #Teammoth
A pale, monochrome-looking Ephestia sp. came into the Indian Meal Moth lure last night. Interesting… #Teammoth
Yesterday evening I hung out the SKI lure, and just like last year it soon went berserko! Ended up with 6 Aspila lobarzewskii. Won’t be doing that again for another year or so 😅 #Teammoth
Today’s star find was this early instar Puss Moth caterpillar, on Grey Poplar. Awww. 😄 #Teammoth
Also from last night was this Ephestia sp which caught my eye as being slightly different from the usual woodiella. Thought it might be an elutella candidate. Retained for gen det but any thoughts on ID welcome… #Teammoth
Anyone sick of Knot-horns yet? No? Good. Here’s another one from last night. A tiddler at barely 8mm long, so probably another Phycitodes saxicola! Is it just me catching these flippin things, or what?! 😅 #Teammoth
I think I need to check myself into Leafminers Anonymous. Mines of Antispila metallella found today. All larval cut outs measured ~5.5-6mm long. #Teammoth
I had my Limantra dispar lure out, and the Black Arches was in the light trap nearby 🙂
65 species from last night, including NFG Round-winged Muslin. Black Arches, Blackneck & Coronet nice to see. A record garden count of 7 Euzophera pinguis amongst the micros. #Teammoth
Evening Rob I’m hoping that the black & linear frass in the early part of the mine means that this is Stigmella confusella?! Thanks again. @vc28nature.bsky.social
Howdi Rob Found these today on Grey Alder. Presumably must be Phyllonorycter strigulatella? Thanks @vc28nature.bsky.social #Teammoth
Not a huge catch from last night, but a few species that I usually only get one of per season: Garden Tiger, Suspected & Shaded Broad-bar. 53 Uncertain/Rustic agg. the most numerous. #Teammoth
The number of times I find an Old Lady lurking by the wheelie bins… #Teammoth
Hi Rob Went for a walk into town at lunchtime and found this on Apple, which I think looks fine for Stigmella incognitella?! Cheers #Teammoth @vc28nature.bsky.social
Thanks Rob, I thought as much. I went back and collected another mine this morning. From a small Sallow in an alleyway at the back of the local corner shop 😂 Leaf mining takes you to all the nicest of locations 😅
Interesting to see the possible dubitella mine. I had something similar the other day, but didn’t keep hold of it for some reason 🙄 What do you think? More likely to be one of the other Phyllonorycter, as I think dubitella would be new for VC39…
