Skydog Sanctuary
@skydogsanctuary
Skydog is a non-profit Mustang Sanctuary in Oregon and Malibu, which rescues wild horses, burros, and reunites equine families torn apart during Bureau of Land Management roundups.
Four #firecrews had come up from #California the day before. They are digging lines and doing some burns to the road to take down some of the fuel. #coyotefire #oregon
Janelle, Koal and I went out to the forest to see if there was anything we could do to help and thank the #firecrews working the #coyotefire.
We’ve taken recommendations from #ForestService consultations and are prepared for #wildfires with numerous vehicles. We are members of the Volunteer Firefighters group, who brought over some equipment to help neighbors in #Oregon if fire is close. #coyotefire
To update you on the #coyotefire near the North side of #skydogsanctuary in #Oregon, I’ve taken some videos to show you the equipment we have at the ranch to fight fires.
Thank you to #watchduty for keeping us informed about the #coyotefire in #oregon and to Complex Incident Management Team California 1 (CIMT Cal 1) for coming to help!
Summer is always stressful and Oregon was hit hard by dry lightning last week, sparking numerous fires. The one close to us is the Coyote Fire. We are prepared, ready, and so far the wind is in our favor, taking it east away from us. #coyotefire #oregon #watchduty
Losing a horse in quarantine takes a huge emotional toll on us all because they came so close to a new, beautiful life at #skydogsanctuary. Our darling Owl passed away. The vet believed she had congenital heart disease, as well as the severe emaciation she suffered.
Sundance taking a cool dip in the pond and loving his #wildhorse life. He was caught running down Klamath Falls HWY after he escaped from his adopter, who starved him. He had some training, but wasn't happy, so we said yes to bringing him to #Skydog. He’s a wonderful, beautiful #mustang.
Rufus has taken the lead and helps Eclipse & Survivor relax and decompress. Smart, savvy, and obviously trained, he’s been around people, but isn’t a fan - he landed in a kill pen, after all. At age 12, he seems wise beyond his years and has his eyes on what’s beyond that fence!
“Fergus’ fight back to good health has been nothing short of extraordinary - testament to the strength of a #mustang and the talent and dedication of his human care team. He has certainly captured all of our hearts. The wee lad is in good sprits home at Skydog.” ~Scott Wilson
Darling little Fergus is out of the hospital and home with mama Mouse. He’s so friendly, soft and fluffy. I have to admit there were tears when I finally got to meet him. He has no idea how different his life is from a normal foal’s and accepts it all with grace and kindness. #wildhorses
Eclipse & Survivor are home! An incredible day, drenched in love, for these two magnificent #wildhorses. They’re starting out on 40 peaceful acres with shady trees, spring water, and soon some equine company to help them settle in. Thank you for helping us restore their #freedom.
Fundraiser for Eclipse & Survivor, wild boys rounded up from Spruce Pequop NV. Part of the Sale Authority Bowie 41 (21 donkeys and 20 mustangs), they turned up at this kill pen just 2 days after a BLM adoption event in Hugo OK. They were so upset and frightened. To Donate: bit.ly/3I1ucWT
It's alfalfa, orchard, and Timothy grass in abundance supplied year after year by Whitaker Farms, #hay grown locally and by the same wonderful people we always buy from. Thanks to donors and patrons on Patreon, we didn't even have to put up a fundraiser to fill the hay barns for winter. Thank you!
Wee Fergus the Fighter is strong enough to walk to his outdoor paddock at the vet clinic, where he spent his first Big Boy Night Out with his nursing mom, Mouse. We got the great news that they can come to Skydog on Monday!
And they’re out! Baby #burros from the baby pen are finally big enough to head out to wild, open spaces with their mums, aunties, and playmates. Zebedee the Zonkey is happily tagging along with Forest & Fiona, Marcie Marshmallow & Lucy, and Cottontail. It won’t take them long to meet AJ’s wild herd
8/ Tell them e) The BLM needs to build a real adoption and sanctuary program that does not cycle animals into the slaughter market.
7/ Tell them d) The Sale Authority program is the most urgent wild horse crisis. It is allowing large numbers of wild horses to be moved into the slaughter pipeline.
6/ Tell them c) Federally protected animals are ending up in the slaughter pipeline after government sales. The BLM is moving out as many as possible to make room for the thousands more they are planning to round up.
5/ Tell them b) Costly helicopter roundups are adding thousands of animals into an unaffordable system. BLM management must prioritize humane, science-based solutions—not more helicopter roundups.
3/ We should be asking why federally protected animals are ending up in the slaughter pipeline after government sales. You can’t solve an off-range crisis by creating a bigger one!.
2/ Why is the BLM ignoring the consequences of its own management strategy? Instead of asking how to remove more #wildhorses from public lands, we should be asking what to do about the 58,000 horses and burros already confined in holding facilities.
1/ ACTION ITEM‼️ The future of America’s wild horses is being decided right now. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is asking for public comments on how it should manage wild horses and burros nationwide. Let’s answer with a deafening roar to protect them. Your voice matters.
Our team climbed the mountain every day with food and buckets of water to keep him hydrated and fed. Our vet hiked up to evaluate his condition and get eyes on the wound. Pegasus chose to heal the wild way before finally letting Janelle bring him down to the barn. Mustangs are amazing.
Pegasus so desperately wanted his freedom when the BLM captured him in CO that he flew over a 6’ fence. He is deeply bonded to his #wildhorse buddy, Rocky, who never left him last year when he was injured and refused to come down from the mountain!
Spartacus and his son, Gatsby, are elusive #wildhorses who usually head for the hills as soon as they see people. They fought hard for their freedom. Spartacus was recaptured after jumping the BLM trap multiple times to escape. It’s an honor to restore their freedom at #skydogsanctuary.
Owl is doing well at a trusted Quarantine that has so much experience refeeding mustangs. Another beloved senior, Violet, was cared for here after being rescued from the same kill pen. We feel like Violet is winking at us for saving this mare, whom we love tenderly as we get her thru this day by day
