500 million. That's how many motorised two-and three-wheelers are on the road today. And together, they're already estimated to be displacing nearly a million barrels of oil every day. Yet these vehicles and the people who operate them are still too often left out of transportation planning.
Millions of livelihoods. Billions of passenger trips. Countless local names. Tuk-tuks. Jeepneys. Matatus. Danfos. Boda bodas. Colectivos. Marshrutkas. Different vehicles. Different places. One shared purpose: connecting people where other transportation often doesn't.
At the just-ended HLPF 2026, water and energy were called the "delivery system" for every other SDG. But delivery systems don't deliver themselves. Pipes, panels, clinical supplies, food, people getting to work, school, hospitals, and transport move all of it.
Your summer read: 1,018. Not pages, transport actions in the latest national climate plans, twice as many as last round. But 78% chase electrification, just 8% touch how much we travel, and barely a third set an emissions target. Doubling ≠ done. New GSR Explained 👇 buff.ly/PFEKmJe
At HLPF 2026, water and energy were called the "delivery system" for every other Sustainable Development Goal. But they don't deliver themselves. Pipes, panels, food, people: transport moves all of it. And transport is the one system with no global goal of its own. 🧵
The transport sector accounted for roughly 7% (USD 6.8 trillion) of global GDP and employed nearly 200 million people worldwide in 2021, yet transport remains the second largest and fastest-growing source of CO2 emissions. #Clearnair #Zeroemissions
Nine years ago Santiago had two electric buses. Today it runs more than 4,000, the largest fleet outside China. Ethiopia is now studying that playbook as it works toward 850 e-buses in Addis Ababa by the time it hosts COP32. 🧵
Governments spent USD 7 trillion propping up fossil fuels in 2023. Fixing transport for good costs USD 2.7 trillion a year. The money exists, 3 times over. We are subsidising the problem and the solution, and the problem is winning Op-ed from our SG Carly Gilbert-Patrick with REN21: buff.ly/dywQ8uv
This war is what 95.4% looks like in practice. Reflex response: cut fuel taxes, raise subsidies, protect supply. That is not energy security. That is fossil dependence. The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport starts in 2026. Same number. Political choice ahead. 🔗 gsr4.slocat.net/fossil-fuel-...
EVs hit 21.7% of car sales in 2024. Fossil dependence held. 58M electric cars on the road. 1.5B combustion cars still running. 61M new fossil vehicles sold last year, nearly half of them SUVs. Electrification is not replacing the fleet. It is being added on top.
95.4%. Share of transport energy from fossil fuels in 2023. Same share as fifty years ago. Same share as when Paris was signed. Every oil shock, every COP, every record EV sales year. The number does not move. Our new GSR Explained asks why. 🧵
The transport sector doesn't lack frameworks. It lacks a North Star. That was SLOCAT's message at the ITF Summit 2026 in Leipzig. 95.4% of transport energy is still fossil. Avoid and Shift could deliver 40 to 60% of emission cuts. Yet the global response keeps defaulting to Improve. 🧵
Three weeks into the Global Sustainable Logistics Survey, and the geography of the response base is the part that needs attention. Asia, Africa and Latin America are still underrepresented. 🧵
We track car sales. We track aviation emissions. But freight and logistics, the sector that moves everything we eat, build, and buy, has no systematic global baseline on sustainability. The Global Sustainable Logistics Survey is the project trying to fix that. 🧵
That's what governments spent on fossil fuel subsidies in 2023. Enough to fund nearly 3 years of the entire global transport transition. Yesterday Santa Marta opened the first global conference on phasing out fossil fuels. Transport has to be on the table. 🧵 #SantaMarta #FossilFreeTransport

It's #WorldHealthDay. Transport killed 1.19M people in road crashes in 2021 and caused 500,000 air pollution deaths. Cost: $3.6 trillion/year. Yet health is barely mentioned in transport policy. #RoadSafety #PublicHealth #SustainableTransport
Tonight the world switches off for #EarthHour. Here's a number to sit with in the dark: fossil fuels still power 95.4% of all transport energy. A share barely changed in 50 years. #ClimateAction #ClimateChange #Transport
🚨 New report with @gaborone: 65% of transport actions in new NDCs focus on tech fixes. Only 8% aim to reduce car trips. Public transport actions have actually declined. Countries are betting on EVs — but that's only part of the solution. #ClimateAction #TransportJustice #NDCs
Transport is the fastest-growing climate problem — and new national climate plans still fall dangerously short. SLOCAT & @giztransport.bsky.social just published our full analysis of transport in the new NDCs. Current ambition? On track for 2.3–2.5°C. Not 1.5°C. 🧵
110 national climate plans analysed. The verdict? Countries are waking up to transport — but not fast enough. New report by GIZ and SLOCAT finds a growing focus on electric mobility, yet current #NDC ambition points towards 2.3–2.5°C. That's not 1.5°C alignment. 👉 slocat.net/NDCs

Walking & cycling are gaining ground in climate pledges. A new analysis from our partners at PATH examines 133 NDCs covering 67% of global emissions. The findings? Real momentum — but serious gaps remain. 👉 slocat.net/active-mobil...
🌍 SLOCAT Impact Stories 2025 are out From climate-aligned transport policy → to freight transformation → to leadership, multilateralism & action at COP30 1/2
🚶♀️🚲 Walking & cycling are increasingly recognised in national climate plans — but ambition still isn’t where it needs to be. New analysis from our partners at PATH shows: • 50% of new NDCs now include walking and/or cycling • Clear growth since 2023 1/2
Have you missed our analysis of Transports in NDCs 3.0? The year 2025 marks a crucial juncture for advancing sustainable, low-carbon transport. Countries are expected to submit updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with enhanced 2035 targets, referred to here as third-generation NDCs.
If you missed our analysis of what happened at #COP30, here’s the takeaway: while the process held, ambition fell short. Progress on finance, just transition and multi-actor action contrasted with the absence of a clear signal on transitioning away from fossil fuels. #ClimateAction #COP30
Crisis is no longer the exception — it’s the context. Transport systems must deliver access, cut emissions, and withstand shocks at once. The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035) is a decisive window. Evidence exists. Leadership must follow. 👉 buff.ly/t4dSdv3 #ClimatePolicy #UNDecade
