SnowPI

Investigating Polar Climate Change Funded by the European Union. Website:
How do we collect data in some of the harshest environments on Earth? 🛰️ SnowPI will combine satellite data, monitoring records and new field campaigns across the Arctic and Antarctic. These data will help improve climate models and support more accurate projections of polar change. #HorizonEU
Research findings can take years to influence adaptation planning. SnowPI is taking a new approach by advancing scientific discovery and societal application in parallel. While researchers improve our understanding of snow, others will translate this knowledge into practical info. #HorizonEU
❄️ We know the polar regions are changing. But how will those changes play out locally? SnowPI will use storylines to explore plausible futures for the Arctic and Antarctic. Rather than predicting a single future, storylines examine realistic climate processes and their consequences. #HorizonEU
❄️ SnowPI behind the science: deep learning! Some snow processes are too complex to accurately represent in climate models. SnowPI is exploring whether deep learning can emulate these processes, helping improve climate projections while reducing computational costs. #HorizonEU
SnowPI has joined the EU Polar Cluster!🇪🇺 Together, we'll strengthen European polar research through collaboration, knowledge exchange & shared expertise. We look forward to advancing research, modelling and observations. 👉Learn more: polarcluster.eu #HorizonEU @europeanpolarboard.bsky.social

❄️ Kicking off SnowPI – Polar Snow, Permafrost and Inland Ice in a Changing World! We are excited to announce the launch of #SnowPI, a new #HorizonEurope project. Over the next 4 years, we will put snow at the centre of climate science to explore its role in polar environments and global impacts.
As the PolarRES project officially comes to an end today, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this four year adventure 💙 The website will stay online with open access to all project resources: polarres.eu The journey continues with the upcoming SnowPI project, so stay tuned!

💻Antarctic sea ice is changing, but models often miss key details. The new MetROMS-UHel model improves sea ice and atmospheric data, with better summer sea ice area predictions — though ice near coasts is thinner and more deformed. Read what this means for Antarctic research bit.ly/4lnN2Jc #H2020
❗Svalbard, one of the fastest warming regions, saw record summer heat in 2024. 🌡️Even after accounting for warming trend, August temps rose far beyond the norm. 📈 PolarRES finds unprecedented weather patterns and warm seas drove it, raising questions about future persistence. 🔗: bit.ly/4os6o2o
