📼 Thief (Michael Mann, 1981) A beautiful character analysis to go along with some amazingly tense heists & explosive action? What more could you want in life! The Tangerine Dream soundtrack & Mann's characteristically fantastic fascination with artificial lights at night are mere cherries on top.
📖 The Road (Cormac McCarthy, 2007) Surprised at how this one ended, given the infamy this book has gained over the years? It's the most straightforward McCarthy I've read so far, in terms of it's use of language, but that only serves to make the scenario within all the more affecting.
🎮 FAITH: The Unholy Trilogy (Airdorf Games, 2017-22) A creative take on occult/religious horror tropes & overall some neat little games... in hindsight. I can't say I was having much fun actually playing the games (Chapter II especially), but that almost felt like the point as well? Bless it all.
📼 Bonnie And Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967) Both Gene Hackman & Wilder's performances save what is otherwise a sloppily edited, badly composed & otherwise fairly mediocre production. More interesting in terms of how it relates to Terrence Malik's Badlands than it is on it's own terms, I feel...
📼 Child's Play (Tom Holland, 1988) A simple yet entertaining horror movie that knows exactly what it wants to do, and goes about it with very little fuss or ambition. Felt that it could've pushed it's very slight '80s consumerism' angle more, but the gore & pyrotechnics certainly make up for it!
📼 The Andromeda Strain (Robert Wise, 1972) The commitment to the scientific process throughout the film gives the story such compelling 'slow burn' pacing, ensuring story beats and the climax have proper gravitas. Absolutely loved the art direction and acting throughout, despite animal testing... 😬
🖥️ The Summer Hikaru Died (Ryouhei Takeshita, 2025) Astonishingly good mix of body horror, supernatural mystery & BL romance in a country town! Slightly torn on a particular plot beat, but I'm hoping it gets resolved down the line. Will absolutely continue reading/watching down the line, for sure!
📼 Ashens and the Quest for the Gamechild (Riyad Barmania, 2013) Very interesting how similar all these YouTuber movies are, both in terms of the (dreadful) plot formula they all wind up using & how little they reflect the channels they're supposed to be derived from. Not very good at all, sadly...
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (Aaron Horvath & Michael Jelenic, 2026) Utterly dismissive of the game it derives its own title from, it instead chooses to patch itself from the rest of the series (& others) to a disappointing effect. It's a complete mess, & hard to justify even as a fan of Mario.
🎮 DREDGE (Black Salt Games, 2023) Went into this with the wrong expectations & came out feeling underwhelmed, despite enjoying the gameplay loop? Not entirely convinced that 'cozy game' and 'Lovecraftian horror' work especially well together, but I appreciate the effort that went into it all.
📖 The Big Sleep (Raymond Chandler, 1939) Hard to ignore the casual homophobia & rampant sexism throughout the book (especially given how plot relevant it all becomes), but Chandler's dry wit & phenomenal use of simile makes it a compelling read regardless. I wonder what the other books are like...?
💿 The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007) Wasn't so sure at first but really grew on me as it went on, ending on a particularly lovely note. It's definitely a 'white boys in a foreign land' type of movie, but I felt there was more respect for India than anything patronizing. Gorgeous colours!
🎮 Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - Special Episode (Nintendo, 2019) An inessential level pack that features more retreads than originals, in a game that was already stretching things thin by the end! A good way to destress, but not especially noteworthy (or particularly necessary) overall.
🖥️Adventure Time (Pendleton Ward, 2009-2018) A remarkable timeline of how American animation changed over the course of a decade, and a thoroughly entertaining cartoon in general! Could have stood to have ended about 2 seasons earlier than it did, but it was still a hell of a finale. Really special!
📼The Offence (Sidney Lumet, 1972) While there's definitely a tense & horrific tale of trauma, desensitization & police brutality at the heart of it all, it's utterly smothered by that slow-as-molasses pacing that gunks up so many 70s cinema... A lesser Lumet, but an interesting story nonetheless.

📼 O-bi, O-ba: The End of Civilization (Piotr Szulkin, 1985) Really enjoyed this Polish take on a post apocalypse! Always teetering on the verge of collapse, Szulkin nonetheless finds ways of weaving sardonic humour throughout a truly tense situation for humanity. A greasy, neon soaked oil painting!
📻 Shadow Over Innsmouth (BBC, 2011) I don't really get on with Lovecraft's overwrought prose so I thought I'd try something of his in audio form? It went down much easier, though you still got that 'undercurrent' to deal with... Still, Richard Coyle read it well, and was suitably eerie overall.
🖥️ Smiling Friends (Zach Hadel & Michael Cusack , 2020-2026) Might as well log this, now that it's apparently wrapped up? A really fun show overall, though I wonder how well it'll hold up rewatching it 5-10 years from now... I preferred the 1st & 2nd series over the 3rd, so I'm glad it wrapped up.
🖥️ CITY: The Animation (Taichi Ishidate, 2025) A phenomenal manga gets a fantastic anime adaption! Very minor quibbles in terms of what made it over (and how) are sandblasted away by how gorgeously realized this is as an adaption of Keiichi Arawi's work. Please, Watch & read CITY!
📼 Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (Paul Schrader, 1985) The more I think back on this, the more impressive it was! Come for the beautiful set design & cinematography, stay for the thoughtfully written screenplay & overarching themes. Definitely gotta read Mishima's work to understand it even more.
