Nectarine pointed out a group of sinister looking black bikes further behind them.
Bryonetta slowed the Ambivalence down to allow the red bike to get closer.
Phil propped open the back doors, hanging on to a grab handle left over from the vehicle’s previous life ferrying the elderly to and from Eastbourne as he leant out and waved the cyclist into position.
Unfolding the wheelchair lift to form a convenient cycle ramp (he didn’t question these things any more), Phil ushered her forward.
‘Get yer wheels in line,’ he shouted. ‘Get yer wheels in line with it!’
‘That’s it,’ Nectarine shouted, hanging on with one hand while waving her on board. ‘Go on, now!’
Pearl powered up the ramp, slamming her brakes on before she powered all the way to the front seats.
‘My friends,’ Pearl panted as she collapsed shakily onto the bench seat. ‘You have to save them too!’
Behind them, a heavy looking man on a similarly heavy looking bicycle sideswiped the oncoming bikes, taking a row of them out and giving his friend time to get close enough for Phil and Nectarine to grab her so she landed awkwardly in the back of the Ambivalence, almost landing on Charlotte’s lap.
‘Are they on board yet?’ Bryonetta shouted.
‘Hang on!’ Phil snapped, then turned his attention back to the stocky figure pedalling frantically on a Grifter XL. ‘Ok,’ he said, trying to sound calm, ‘hang on.’
‘Phil,’ Nectarine said quietly, nodding towards a minion peloton swarming from the side streets and rapidly gaining on the tired escapee.
‘Come on!’ Phil shouted, leaning out to try grab the rider.

There was a thump at the side of the Ambivalence, as the lead group of goons from some unseen enemy generator rode straight into it like a BMX zombie movie cliche. One of them headbutted the open back door with enough force to snap the prop keeping it open, the closing door almost taking Nectarine’s fingers off.
‘Hold tight!’ Bryonetta hollered, and the van swerved away from the oncoming horde.
Nectarine grabbed the flapping back door and slammed it into the advancing goons while Phil reached and grabbed pointlessly at the last escaping bike, its rider kicking out wildly at any ANUS goon foolish enough to get too close.
‘Hold it steady!’ Phil shouted to Bryonetta.
‘Make it quick!’ she yelled back urgently.
Clinging to the doorframe, Phil leant out of the back door, reaching for the panicked man on the Grifter, urging him to reach back, but the BMX ninjas kept getting in the way so even their fingertips barely met, like a scene from Michael Bay’s Sistine Chapel.
As he kicked out at his attacker, the bike was pushed back towards the untethered back door of the Ambivalence, which swung to greet him.
Doc Nectarine lunged to grab him, but the Ambivalence had already greeted him forcefully to the head, and it was only after Charlotte made her own heroic lunge to grab Nectarine’s shirt that they managed to drag the heavy bike onto the ramp, and all staggered back into the cabin. With its rider safe, Phil shoved the Grifter out in front of the oncoming peloton, where it took out all but the most persistent attackers, then pulled the ramp up and shut the doors quickly.
'Put your foot down BB!' Charlotte said with all the urgency of a toddler after her third Capri-Sun.

The Ambivalence Chronicles

Phil Grundy had been shivering with anticipation for so long that, when he saw someone manhandling a large, but mostly unassuming, parcel out of an unmarked van, he made an Olympic qualifying sprint to the front door, barely noticing that he almost shoved his sulky teenage daughter head first into the downstairs toilet on the way.
Phil met the delivery man at the front door, thanked him effervescently, and then hurried around to his garage with his latest purchase.
The purchase in question had been long sought after, and after a fierce bidding war with thechipwhisperer, it was his for the somewhat higher than hoped for sum of £102.43 (plus p&p).
The sender had not been shy about using parcel tape, and had helpfully labelled the package ‘Handle with Care’, and ‘from 20th Century Toys’, and ‘The Only Way Is Up’.
The sulky daughter mooched into the garage behind him, feigning indifference. ‘You got?’
‘This, Charlie-’
‘Charlotte.’
‘Charlotte,’ Phil corrected himself, ‘is the stuff of legend.’
Charlie (he would always call her that in his head) blew bubble-gum through her black-painted lips.
‘If this is what I think it is,’ Phil went on, hopping around like an excited puppy, ‘it’s practically the Holy Grail among collectors.’
‘An old computer then?’
Phil carefully selected a knife from the workbench.
‘Not just any old computer,’ he explained. ‘A Sinclair ZX81 with the legendary Issue Zero motherboard. The developers model. Among some of the more secretive retrocomputing forums they say these were only ever used by Sir Clive himself.’

‘Wait a minute,’ Phil said as he read the next message. ‘These messages aren’t as random as they seem.’
‘You’ll have to tell me later,’ Sam said, getting into the car quickly. ‘Legoland is on the march again.’
Phil turned to see those dull white walls building up along each side of the road behind them.
Sam wasted no time in starting the engine, and roared off down the narrow road, g-force pushing Phil back into the ill-fitting passenger seat.
Even at the break-neck pace Sam managed to achieve, the background weirdness quickly overtook them.
‘Ok wisdom guy,’ Sam shouted over the engine noise. ‘What’s going on? What are those messages, and do they have anything to do with the claustrophobia I’m suddenly developing?’
‘Well, I can’t speak for your claustrophobia, but-’ Phil was interrupted by another text arriving.
FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING
‘The messages are straight out of 3D Monster Maze,’ he finished.
The mini screeched to a halt as a wall sprung up in front of it.
‘As, I’m guessing, is the maze?’ Sam said backing up quickly.
‘Yes,’ Phil said grimly. ‘And the-’
‘Don’t say it,’ Sam interrupted. ‘Please.’
‘Alright then. Just keep your eye out for an exit,’ he said. ‘And a Tyrannosaurus rex.’
HE IS HUNTING FOR YOU
‘Take it easy, we’re in the clear at the moment,’ Phil said.
‘All these sodding right angles, he could be hiding behind any one of them.’
‘Not to mention it’s completely disorientating.’
‘Yeah, every damn wall is identical,’ Sam agreed. ‘We might never find the others again.’
‘Oh, we’ll find them,’ Phil said with all the determination of Liam Neeson in Taken.
FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING

‘Stop,’ Phil said. ‘Stop the engine!’
The mini skidded to a halt again. Phil held his finger to his lips in a shushing motion and slowly wound down the window next to him. It squeaked, the tiny noise echoing painfully between the high walls on either side of them.
Phil leant out of the window, looking ahead and behind them, listening for those footsteps. Soon enough, he heard them, great stomping, shuddering booms that echoed through the maze, effectively shrouding the monster’s location.
‘I think it’s that way,’ he whispered.
Sam nodded, started the car, and quietly backed up, turning around at a handy corner and driving – she hoped – away from the destructor as sedately as T. Rex was able.
REX HAS SEEN YOU
‘Crap,’ Phil said. ‘He’s onto us.’
‘Where?’
‘No idea. I’ll keep watching.’
‘What’s that over there?’
Phil jerked around, but it was just the reception building. ‘The hub,’ he said. ‘Head for it - maybe we’ll find Charlie.’
‘Well we certainly can’t go around here all day.’
Sam turned the car cautiously in the direction of the hub and began to weave through the complex web of right angles that stood between them and their friends and family.
‘Don’t hang around,’ Phil said. ‘I think I can hear it.’
‘Hear it?’ Sam said. ‘I can feel its footsteps through the damn steering wheel!’
RUN HE IS BESIDE YOU
‘Go, he’s close!’ Phil screamed.
Sam dropped a gear and wound the revs up, the car suddenly accelerating forward.
RUN HE IS BEHIND YOU

‘Well, at least we know where it is!’ Sam screamed.
‘Put your foot down,’ Phil said. ‘We’ll lose him easy.’
‘I intend to,’ Sam said. ‘That or die trying.’
‘Well, if it helps, I heard there’s no cooler way to die than in a 1275GT.’
‘When Bolan died, he was in T. Rex, not in a T. rex.’
‘Sam, it’s on top-’
There was a crash, and a very pointy letter v tore a hole in the roof behind Phil. The engine raced as the front wheels were lifted off the ground.
‘Abandon car!’ Phil shouted.
‘What?’
‘Get out!’ Phil unbuckled and opened the door. ‘Now!’
Reluctantly, Sam followed suit, jumping to the ground as a hideous dinosaur-shaped jumble of blocks and letters lifted her most prized possession into the air.
‘Run!’ Phil shouted. ‘I think it’s stuck on its teeth!’
‘My car!’
‘Is still keeping us alive,’ Phil said. ‘Now let’s get back to the hub, try and find the others before Rex there finds a toothpick the size of an apple tree.'

McCaffrey had started off on a rambling monologue about the constantly changing state of art, when the rain suddenly escalated into a spectacularly violent thunderstorm. Apathetic about sculpture, and firmly opposed to getting much wetter than she already was, Pearl looked around for whatever shelter was to be found around the market place. A low budget portico entrance labelled ‘Romford Indoor Market’ and ‘Closed until further notice’ and ‘we agopolise for the inconvience’ beckoned. Through a gap in the closed roller shutters, a closing down sale notice tormented them with offers of 70% off all umbrellas as they huddled between leaks in the canopy, looking increasingly like piles of damp rags left out awaiting a bin lorry that would never come.

The bad news turned out to be that in the chaos and confusion of the Bootlebot battle, Viktor Wendig had somehow gained access to the Cartography Room.
‘I’m on my way,’ Gary said, and in a blur of yellow he was gone, running through the Manor’s corridors until he burst into the Cartography Room, katanas flashing with the reflected glow of dozens of PC monitors.
Wendig was tinkering in a corner, probably trying to sabotage the house AI or something. Gary threw a warning star, which whistled past the invader’s ear and sunk into the wall with a ching. Wendig turned, an unpleasant grin on his already unpleasant face, flexed a hand wearing some sort of electronic glove, and casually pulled something from inside his suit jacket.

The Ambivalence Chronicles

Sam Cooper slipped away quietly, peering carefully around a corner of the building to see a large compound surrounded by a high fence topped with razor wire; Parc Ferme.
Reaching into her back pocket, she retrieved Wendig’s ID card, hoping that this would prove to be the point at which it would become necessary. Then trying her best to look as if she belonged there, she strolled as nonchalantly as possible towards the enclosure, looking for a pedestrian gate as she went.
There was one, but it took her several attempts to scan the card and get the lock to slide open, allowing her passage into the hallowed ground. With a sigh of relief, it opened just as some security guards were looking rather suspiciously in her direction, so she waved at them cheerily and wandered in, again resuming her air of forced nonchalance.

Inside the Romford Municipal Landmark, a garish blue armchair with the word ‘KING’ embroidered on it in large, friendly letters sat upon a raised platform overlooking a medium sized meeting room. Upon the armchair sat Viktor Wendig of the Assembly of Newly Uplifted Systems, resplendent in a fake moustache, cheap plastic crown and faux-royal gown. Upon Wendig sat an unhappy face, and this only partly due to moustache-based nasal ticklage.

‘Are you seeing this, or have I overdone the special smoothies?’
‘Seeing what?’ Phil shouted. ‘What can you see?’
‘I feel like I’m on a Bulgarian prog rock album cover,’ is what Phil thought Mr Heli said.
‘What era?’ said Sam.
‘What?’ said everyone else.
‘Early Malcolm Segments,’ Heli replied. ‘Somewhere between their second album and the 1979 Jamie and the Magic Torch Annual.’
‘Both classics in their field,’ Sam said appraisingly. ‘If that's our portal, we need to find it; it leads to a land of impeccable taste and near-faultless psychedelia.’

Phil jumped down from the driver’s seat and made his way to the back of the Ambivalence, pausing only briefly to pick up the last surviving can of Red Max. The Elixir of Legends! it said on the can. Unleash the beast within with Red Max! also. Most of the Red Max had already been unleashed in a legendary tsunami of caffeine and B-vitamins which had marked their arrival at the Municipal Landmark.

Gary drew his swords in readiness, only to find there was no readying himself for the jagged blade of concentrated red light that extended from the hilt in Wendig’s hand, hissing as it fried the air around it.
Wendig waved the light saber gently, testing its weight, and then launched himself at Gary.

‘Who were you expecting?’ she said. ‘Dave Vizard?’

‘GRUNDYYY!’
‘Um, what?’ Phil looked around in confusion; the Entelechus had never yelled at him quite so angrily before.
‘Ah, balljoints,’ Sam slumped in the driver's seat as a bloody, battle weary figure stepped in front of the interface.
‘Never a dragon around when you need one is there?’ Phil said.
‘You shall not pass!’ Wendig shouted, his voice hoarse.
‘Really?’ Charlotte said, and before anyone could stop her she was out of the Ambivalence and marching towards him.
Wendig, who looked like he’d been thrown from a first floor window by a dragon, stood as straight as his battered body would let him, and deliberately looked over Charlotte’s shoulder, to where Phil was stuck in a parental dilemma of pride or protectiveness. ‘Grundy!’ he called. ‘You send a girl to fight your battles?’
The girl stepped closer, so he couldn’t easily look past her. ‘Hello,’ she said sweetly, ‘my name is Charlotte Grundy. You pissed off my father. Prepare to die.’
