Curious scientist leading a research team mainly working on organelle biology and biotechnology: we study -and often “torture”- chloroplasts to understand how they do their magic ;)
“Let love shine and we will find a way to come together, we can make things better!” | Holiday by Madonna ;)
This summer I swapped conference badges for a lab coat and got a few days at the bench and find out whether an idea has legs! And before anyone asks: yes, that's still my UCSF lab coat with elastic knit cuffs. Every other lab coat feels like it was designed by someone who'd never held a pipette…
Do you enjoy the thrill of discovery? Does this photo give you good vibes? Then you might be the right person to join our lab! Current projects range from chloroplast transcription to thylakoid membrane remodeling & we would be happy to welcome bright and motivated people at all career stages!
What was this year’s Science Ball about for me? Celebrating the friendships and collegiality behind the science at the @viennabiocenter.bsky.social: good vibes, shared laughs, and lots of “sharing is caring”—all in elegant dresses ;-). So here you go: a dance-floor shot capturing that spirit!
The ClaRa retreat V1 was a blast! The Clausen + Ramundo folks teamed up for two days of science, cooking, and good chaos — plus some skiing ⛷️ Then came the pipetting showdown… and the whale trophy swam home with us 🐋🏆! Will the @clausenlab.bsky.social win it back next year? Probably 😅 …
Here we go again! Join us in Vienna, May 21–22, for two days of plant science—talks, discussions, and celebration of what makes plants both beautiful and essential 💚Full program + registration here: www.oeaw.ac.at/gmi/news-eve... Come be part of it — each of you counts!
Prepare to be jelly @atinygreencell.bsky.social : this little pearl is way less complicated and more efficient than what you’re dealing with… 🙃
What?!? & Why? @science.org I know the price is very reasonable… but let’s put it this way: how would you feel if scientists put a very reasonable price for any manuscript they review for you? Let’s talk about this.
My son is Pure Energy (If there were a son-to-mom energy transfer option, I would sign up immediately—even a tiny 10% top-up would be a game-changer!)
This loquat tree grew because I stubbornly kept trying to sprout seeds from the fruits I was eating as a child. I couldn’t understand why the seeds wouldn’t ever grow—like in the song “Per fare un albero ci vuole il seme, per fare il seme ci vuole il frutto…”—until one day I finally made it happen 😅
What happens when your son is in charge of taking the lab picture 😅! Oh well—whatever, just real life, kids included, and a very special evening together 🥰🎄🤗
Still buzzing from #NonSeedUK2025 @gensocuknonseed.bsky.social Organizing energy: calm and cool (@philcarella.bsky.social) And the questions were flying — no holding back, just pure curiosity. Loved it! Edinburgh 🏰 next year? Absolutely, UK-based or not 🙃!
Very inspiring keynote talk by Stefan Rensing @rensingstefan.bsky.social at today’s UK NonSeed Plant Meeting. It was an inspiring day, and I am so glad I could be part of it! Thanks again for the invitation @philcarella.bsky.social 💚
Looking forward to a fantastic day of science @johninnescentre.bsky.social with @philcarella.bsky.social and @rensingstefan.bsky.social — and yes, some self-promotion, because the academic society has collectively decided that quiet competence is not enough…
Astrid Lindgren is one of my favourite children’s book authors. But my kids are already pretty wild, so I’m not sure they need this… they’re basically Pippi on a good day 😉! Kidding aside, I am a big fan of Lindgren—have you ever read her biography? www.astridlindgren.com/de/astrid-li...
What I loved most about UCSF Genentech Hall — and what I’m trying to cultivate here at the VBC — is the genuine sense of flat hierarchy. I just found this picture of my son in Bruce Alberts’ office (to be fair, almost any adult or kid would be drawn to that office!). I was a random postdoc, 1/2
There are a couple of empty chairs at our table — want to sit with us? Reach out to me or any lab member www.oeaw.ac.at/gmi/research... We’ll be hiring two postdocs in 2026. We’re excited about ambitious and creative ideas and are committed to supporting future group leaders 1/2
Normal person: “Look at these beautiful red leaves” Me: “I wonder how the plastids in those leaves look like…”
Machine learning amazes me; child learning moves me. I often wonder how we can continue nurture both in the future—without letting machines make us forget what it means to learn as humans
So proud of our Icy, who gave a talk at the Chlamydomonas conference and was recognized with a prize! Moments like these—seeing lab members shine—are the happiest part of being a group leader 😊
Travel’s got me wiped, but catching up with @colindascheele.bsky.social, @pierresantucci.bsky.social & @olivierduss.bsky.social at #FEBS2025 made it totally worth it. Huge thanks to Pelin Telkoparan and Dilek Cevik for the wonderful hospitality—what a time in Istanbul!
