sincerely it sounds like it would have been quicker to just get a book or go to the wikipedia article. I'm not seeing any educational benefit to this whatsoever

Campaign for Mayor of Los Angeles

In 1969, Bradley first challenged incumbent Mayor Sam Yorty, a conservative Democrat for mayor in the nonpartisan election. Armed with key endorsements (including the Los Angeles Times), Bradley held a substantial lead over Yorty in the primary, but was a few percentage points shy of winning the race outright. However, Yorty pulled out a come-from-behind victory to win reelection. Yorty questioned Bradley's credibility in fighting crime and painted a picture of Bradley, a fellow Democrat, as a threat to Los Angeles because he would supposedly open up the city to Black Nationalists. Bradley did not use his record as a police officer in the election. With the race factor, even many liberal white voters became hesitant to support Bradley. It would be another four years, in 1973, before Bradley would unseat Yorty.[

Anthony Marra's 'A Constellation of Vital Phenomena' was the first book I've read this year and it reminded me of how powerful and moving novels can be. I could talk endlessly about why it works so well but suffice to say I can't recommend it highly enough.

Finished Reading the Yangchen Chronicles of the Avatar books. Loved seeing a different era of this world. Yangchen and Kavik were so fun to spend time with and Chaisee was a very memorable overall antagonist

reading lots of star wars comics lately, you'd be surprised how often characters say some variation of "By The Light!" or "Light save us". It makes sense in context, but I associate it so strongly with Wheel of Time that it does take me out of the story for a quick second.

The entire testimony is worth a read. here he links poor whites to the struggle of Black Americans. pointing out how poor Whites, through ingrained anti-black prejudice, wind up supporting their own oppressors even as their material conditions are little better than that of Black Americans

quote from Martin Luther King Jr, taken from testimony he gave to the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (Kerner Commission), on October 23rd, 1967: "While Negroes form the vast majority of Americans disadvantaged, there are millions of white poor who would also benefit from such a bill. The moral justification for special measures for Negroes is rooted in the robberies inherent in the institution of slavery. Many poor whites, however, were the derivative victims of slavery. As long as labor was cheapened by the involuntary servitude of the black man, the freedom of white labor, especially in the south, was little more than a myth. It was free only to bargain from the depressed base imposed by slavery upon the whole labor market. Nor did this derivative bondage end when formal slavery gave way to the de facto slavery of discrimination. To this day the white poor also suffer deprivation and the humiliation of poverty if not of color. They are chained by the weight of discrimination, though its badge of degradation does not mark them. It corrupts their lives, frustrates their opportunities and withers their education. In one sense it is more evil for them because it has confused so many by prejudice that they have supported their own oppressors. It is a simple matter of justice that America in dealing creatively with the task of raising the Negro from backwardness should also be rescuing a large stratum of the forgotten white poor. They hated him because he made them feel uncomfortable. He made White America look at harsh truths they really preferred not to see. He also explicitly supported compensation and preferential treatment for Black people, which he knew was unpopular with even Liberal Whites

Also this was the stated reason for stopping the reading. Which...yeah... No on in good faith can say that the Sneetches story isn't related to economics. This was just the district rep making things up to shut down the conversation.

Seriously, like...can I just say that I'm working for the government and collect resumes from people under that premise? This "department" currently just doesn't exist.
