My son is hilarious. Today he intercepted a package from a local charity addressed to my wife. The charity made the mistake of leaving enough room on the address block for him to add a line. He copied the font perfectly. Hilarity ensued during dinner.

Writing on an envelope: "Joann, see enclosed for a Matching Gift Opportunity that could the impact of your support!" My son inserted the line,"Only truly bad people don't donate!"

As always, #OTD I honour my great uncle, Pte Perry Archibald Massey, 116th Battalion CEF, KIA 25 May 1917 near Vimy, at age 21. Son of Elsie Massey of Hamilton, ON, and John Massey of Halifax. Now resting at Petit-Vimy British Cemetery.

Of course, there were also notes issued before our national currency, including those from the Bank of Montreal. Here's one that showed Sir Edward Seaborne Clouston, who appeared on the $5, $10 and $20 bills in a 1904 series. Sir Edward was the uncle of Canada's hero at Dunkirk, Campbell Clouston.

On the night of 14/15 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe — a Canadian surgeon in the #RAMC — parachuted into eastern Bosnia with two young British sergeants to establish a 200-bed hospital as part of a #SOE mission supporting Tito’s Partisans. Dafoe’s story is told in my book ‘The Parachute Ward.’

Duffle or duffel coat? That came up today while editing my research note about a figure of the pier master of the east mole at Dunkirk in 1940. Both spellings are accepted, though "duffel" is closer to its origin, the Belgian town of Duffel. But the British seem to prefer “duffle.” Which is it?

#OTD 50 years ago, I flew solo (in a Piper Cherokee) for the first time. I had to side slip into my final approach after informed that an airliner was on path for the runway. (That's a Harvard in the background, while filming a documentary. I look a bit full of myself, but those were good times.)

@silenceinpolish.bsky.social I'm hoping to learn more about Jozef Klepaczko's military service but don't know where to start. He and Janet Clouston met in Scotland while she was posted there as a FANY. They settled in Montreal after the war. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Had a fender bender today, my first in more than 50 years. Amazing to me was a young lad who approached me after and said he had a dash cam video of it, which he emailed to me. It clearly shows the other driver crossing in front of me when I crashed at low speed into her. Still, what damage ensued!

Just finished reading the worst #SWW history book I’ve encountered, all 800+ pages because I had to “turn every page” (per Robert Caro). I won’t embarrass the author by naming or showing the cover. This is the self-published, conspiracy-loaded narrative summarised by everyone’s favourite meme.

Dafoe's brother William, also a doctor, played a significant but largely unsung role in the quints' care. Also, there were several doctors in the Dafoe family, including Colin Scott Dafoe, from Madoc, ON (like the others), who saved countless lives a surgeon in Yugoslavia during the #SWW.

Nice to see the weathered #ParksCanada plaque in #Lachine QC honouring Cdr Campbell Clouston RN replaced to mark his 125th birthday. Clouston, born in #Montreal #OTD in 1900, was pier master of the east mole at #Dunkirk in 1940. Installation and pix by the indefatigable Ray Coutu.
