Despite our excitement about the work, we noticed a problem with how it was being evaluated by Pfizer, most specifically by Gardiner and Hutson, who had important input to the final decision-makers for Pfizer on the ongoing collaboration. As we were enjoying the positive human infusion data and anticipating a major effort to design both protease resistant GLP-1 analogues and an inhibitor of the responsible protease as new diabetes therapies, I was shocked when told that senior Pfizer leadership had concluded that there would never be another injectable therapy for diabetes other than insulin. What led them to this conclusion was never explained (and of course it proved totally false in the real world over subsequent decades), but the implication for our program was unambiguous. Pfizer stated that continuation of the project would require us to identify a route for GLP-1 administration other than injection, such as trans-nasal or transcutaneous. The MetaBio team and the founders vigorously disagreed with Pfizer's view that an injectable GLP-1 analogue would never be worth developing, but our arguments had no effect. Based on knowledge at the time about trans-nasal and transcutaneous delivery of peptides like GLP-1, and the short half-life of the protein, we considered it extremely unlikely that either approach could be successfully developed. We nevertheless undertook efforts to develop these modalities, and they were predictably unsuccessful.

About three years into the collaboration, Pfizer informed CalBio it would end its commitment after four rather than five years, permitted by the agreement with [End Page 331] due notice. And indeed, they did just that. The other scientific founders and I tried to convince CalBio leadership to seek alternative external funding to continue the promising work, or to fund it internally, but this didn't happen. Why? CalBio's primary focus and most of its funding was to advance development of Natrecor, a project led by the company's scientific director, John Lewicki, work that eventually led to the company's sale to Johnson and Johnson. Via a process that wasn't transparent, our founder's interest in MetaBio was assessed to be of a certain (we considered low) value, and on that basis, our ownership share was "bought out." We pushed back on the terms and obtained legal advice, but in the end we accepted the terms. With that, our nascent efforts to be the first company to develop a GLP-1 based diabetes therapy, either an analogue resistant to degradation, or an inhibitor of the protease we expected would soon be discovered ended, both emerging more than a decade later as blockbuster therapies.

The lens of history is powerful. In this case, retrospective analysis makes it clear that our effort in the GLP-1 therapeutic space was far ahead of its time. If the full force of CalBio and Pfizer had pressed ahead to develop either a more stable GLP-1 analogue, or an inhibitor of the protease that would soon have been identified, it's extremely likely we would have succeeded. Patients would have benefited, and the company's success would have been enormous. What accounted for the decision to precipitously end the work?

A clear answer wasn't evident to me in 1991/92 when MetaBio ceased to function, but it's worth considering some possible explanations. Ceasing the work on GLP-1 and other promising projects was opposed by the MetaBio founders and the MetaBio scientific team, so answering this question has two parts: why did Pfizer make this decision, and why, in response to that decision, did CalBio not continue the work?

A definitive answer with regard to Pfizer would require review of internal records or interviews with key decision-makers, neither of which is possible now, more than 30 years later. What is clear is that the decision by Hutson, Gardiner, and others was mistaken, based on faulty judgments about the potential role of GLP-1 as a therapy for diabetes, the potential for an injectable formulation of GLP-1 analogues to be successfully adopted, and the potential that clinically obvious effects on appetite and gastric emptying might enable future use in obesity therapy, among others. We interacted with the key figures at Pfizer leading metabolic research and those higher up in the corporate pharmaceutical chain of command. I had been deeply impressed by their rapid decision to invest in our company, and I was equally dumbfounded by their decision to end their investment despite convincing early evidence of the program's success. The Myth of Spartan Military Excellence

So what have we found?

Sparta had a formidable military reputation, but their actual battlefield performance hardly backed it up. During the fifth and fourth centuries, Sparta lost as often as it won. Spartan battlefield tactics were a bit better than other Greek poleis, but this is damning with faint praise. The spartiates themselves were mostly like every other group of wealthy Greek hoplites. But the Spartan military reputation was extremely valuable – the loss of that reputation during the Peloponnesian War does much to explain the rough decades Sparta would experience following its end.

That is one of the core things we can learn from Sparta: a reputation for military excellence can often be more valuable than the excellence itself – real or imagined. A powerful army can only fight one battle at a time, but the idea of a powerful army can intimidate any number of enemies all at once. As we’ll see next week, when Sparta was forced to turn from intimidation to force, it ran out of force with frightening speed.

Those who have been here for a while may already be wondering, “Wait, though – this is the guy who is always telling us that winning battles isn’t as important as achieving strategic objectives and who is always on about logistics and operations! What about that?” I think that actually goes a long way to explaining how an army with a modest advantage in tactics and organization ends up without a winning record. We’ll get into the limitations of Spartan strategy, operations and logistics next week.

But before we go there, I want to stress something here: the horrors of Spartan society cannot be justified on the grounds they produced superior soldiers, because they quite evidently did not. Sparta’s actual military record was, in fact, depressingly average. Only the reputation was special; the men were just men.

Good article. He's earned his parental leave. Ken Martin does seem to be a useless guy, but maybe the decision not to release that autopsy was right. When someone leaks something, they think it's right (ie: will help them to achieve their goals).

The deeper problem with the autopsy is that it imagines a voter who doesn't exist. The kind of voter the report's recommendations would persuade - someone weighing Harris's issue positions against Trump's, watching campaign ads carefully, updating their beliefs in response to messaging frames - is essentially a Washington consultant, not your grandma who can't afford to to pay her bills because gas is up 50% and electricity subsidies just ended. One of the problems with autopsies is that voter psychology takes a lot of work to understand well, but the people who have that skillset largely aren't the type of person the DNC is hiring to audit their choices.

$This is also why the hidden axis of American politics - the well-being-oriented, "non-ideological" dimension that runs orthogonal to traditional ideology - keeps catching strategists off guard. Most Washington-based political professionals were trained to think about voters along a single left-right spectrum, and to design messages to "move" voters along it. But a huge fraction of the electorate is non-ideological. They hold a mix of progressive and conservative views that are basically uncorrelated with one another, and they choose candidates based on cues that have little to do with the policy debates that animate party staff. They want change. They want competence. They want leaders to "fight" for them. They do not want to hear about left-right identity politics if the price of a gallon of milk is $6.$

The only way to escape the gravity of anti-incumbent sentiment is to do something big enough that voters actually feel it, or signal that you're trying. You don't need a 12-point plan and to rattle off macroeconomic indicators from the Oval Office; Biden tried that. The next Democratic candidate will need something on the scale of the New Deal or the Great Society a generational project that reorders the relationship between the American economy and the American worker, and that voters can point to and say "My life is better because of this party.

There is a gradual, then exponential, growth in search interest from 2013 (roughly first highly publicised Tesla near-bankruptcy) onwards. 2017 is the big shift upwards.

Interestingly, the search interest near-halves in 2023 before spiking again in 2025.

To editorialise, the guy was generally pretty well-liked for quite a while, but before the 2022 peak is the last time it was normal to think he was of net benefit to humanity, uncontroversially.

The mess started in COVID when he was crying because he wasn't allowed to send people into his factories because they might die.

“Maria Farmer reported Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s crimes in 1996. Had the government done their job, and properly investigated Maria’s report, over 1000 victims could have been spared and 30 years of trauma avoided,” Freeman also said. “After several years of asking for her records, the [government] finally released at least some of them today.”

Annie Farmer testified at Maxwell’s 2021 trial that she was just 16 years-old when the British publishing heiress gave her a nude massage at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch.

During Annie Farmer’s time in the witness box, she described how Epstein and Maxwell groomed her for abuse – including using an unwitting Maria Farmer as a means of access. She recalled meeting Epstein at his Manhattan mansion in late 1995, when her sister Maria was working for him as a fine arts painter.

Epstein bought a plane ticket to New York for Annie Farmer, who said she was told by her sister that Epstein was potentially “interested in helping me with my education”. When she first went to Epstein’s house with Maria Farmer, it was to pick up theatre tickets he had purchased for them.

“He seemed very friendly and kind of down to earth. He was dressed casually,” Annie Farmer testified. The next time Annie Farmer met Epstein was when they went to the movies with him and her sister Maria.

He sat between them and, at one point during the movie, Epstein “caressed” her hand. “He was rubbing the bottom of my shoe and then rubbing my foot, my leg,” Annie Farmer said. “I was very nervous.”

Annie Farmer explained that she did not tell Maria as her older sister was “very protective” and she didn’t want to affect her job with Epstein. But in spring 1996, Annie Farmer’s mother told her that she was going on a weekend trip to Epstein’s New Mexico ranch.

Maxwell told Annie Farmer to undress. She complied and got under a sheet that was on a massage table.

“She pulled the sheet down and exposed my breasts, and started rubbing on my chest and on my upper breast,” Annie Farmer said. “I just wanted so badly to get off the table.”

When Annie Farmer woke up the next day, Epstein “bounded into the room, saying he wanted to cuddle”.

“He climbed into bed with me,” Annie said. “He pressed his body into me.” She escaped Epstein by telling him she had to use the restroom.

In the years following Maria Farmer’s report, accusers’ accounts and court documents indicate that Epstein’s abuse persisted. When Epstein was arrested in 2019, prosecutors alleged that he “sexually exploited and abused dozens of minor girls” from 2002 to 2005 at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida.

The 2008 plea deal that allowed Epstein to plead guilty to state-level prostitution charges in Florida, came during a federal investigation that involved at least 40 teenage girls.

During a CNN interview after the document was released, Annie Farmer pointed out that numerous girls were abused after her sister came forward.

The University of Melbourne's finance committee didn't invite members to question the closure of the 85-year-old literary journal, instead only waving it through. Meanwhile, all external offers to save Meanjin have been continually rebuffed by MUP.

Guys your story is good but your website is awful. If you had less intrusive UI stuff, you could fit more ads (while making it less annoying). You're not making money for including a CBS YouTube video I have to wait 20s to dismiss. I'm not schizophrenic, so I'm not going to scroll to a next story.

It took 20 seconds, okay maybe 15, before I had the option to stop an embedded YouTube video from taking up 30% of the screen. It's not on the Independent's channel, so they're making no money from this.

No one has deliberately scrolled between news articles this way, ever.

They maybe let a publication claim time on site or continued engagement, but everyone involved knows it's a lie, including – especially – the advertisers.

Got high, wondered 'How did he actually make his money?' and began reading his Wikipedia, and know what - conspiracy theories are fun. So many strands to chase, so many intersections with history. And people. I get it now. Time to twirl that MAGA-red string between the pins and see who it finds.

That's a genuinely bad way to give the @washingtonpost.com a free pass. The WaPo story is dystopian and shameless. No one likes the Age, etc, but 1) the story is by AP and 2) a straight report contrasting against protests. What do you want, a headline saying someone should knife him in a toilet?
