Penelope Keith had the extraordinary ability to poke fun at the cruellest qualities of Englishness, without ever making the material cruel. She created characters who were ludicrous, superior, bigoted, without ever being unlikeable or cold. It is one of the greatest magic tricks an actor can pull.
