Since it's too long to fit in a post here's a screenshot of the text I sent about it and my thoughts on the matter
Lot of guys on the padres I respect, Manny Machado ain't one of them
Maybe at one or two stations, but overall, no, it isn't. We don't need to be lying.
1. Sinners (USA) A film about black history in America disguised as a vampire movie that doesn't hold back. The musical numbers left my jaw on the floor. Michael B. Jordan is incredible, and I love how horny the movie is when you consider how Hollywood, to this day, desexualizes the black male.
2. It Was Just an Accident (Iran) What to even say about this film? An amazing achievement, as all films shot in Iran are, and what a statement it makes about the Iranian people, the government and human nature. Not to mention a perfect ending.
3. Marty Supreme (USA) Definite Uncut Gems vibes although a very different movie in every respect. Timothée Chalamet is unrecognizable in what might be the best performance. Visually and stylistically Safdie makes you feel like you're in the early 50's and table tennis has never been so captivating.
4. One Battle After Another (USA) The movie of the moment for 2025. Who knows if it would even get made today in our current Christo-fascist state. Viva la revolucion!
5. Sirāt (Spain) This movie has balls bigger than the LBJ replica testes John Oliver had made. It took turns that made my jaw drop to the floor. You never know what they're going to do next and it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
6. Sentimental Value (Norway) A beautiful film about family, hurt, healing and forgiveness. Wonderful performances in another hit from Joachim Trier.
7. Bugonia (USA) The only reason this isn't higher is because I knew exactly where it was going because it's Yorgos. If I wasn't so familiar with his work I would have been like whaaaaaaaaaaat
8. Left-handed Girl (Taiwan) The whole time I was watching this I kept thinking to myself "damn I love Sean Baker" and then had to keep reminding myself that it's not technically a Sean Baker film, but his fingerprints are all over it. A beautiful portrait of a family trying to make ends meet.
9. Late Shift (Switzerland) Leonie Benesch (Teacher's Lounge, The White Ribbon) brings a powerhouse performance in this film that brings Uncut Gems energy to an understaffed surgical ward as she deals with difficult patients, colleagues and family members.
10. Belén (Argentina) the true story of the legal battle that far too recently brought abortion rights to Argentina with powerful performances and a story that feels personal and intimate in a way that brings real emotion to the screen.
