Person living in Winnipeg/Treaty 1 territory. Winsome combo of giddy farm girl, smartass former punkette & intransigent pseudo-intellectual. Director of CMU Press. Love the show, Steve. Hello to Jason Isaacs. New novel soonish. Interwebs: suesorensen.net
So many excellent performances. Farewell to Sam Neill. Clockwise from top left: Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Reilly Ace of Spies, Peaky Blinders, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, The Piano.
Working through early seasons of George Gently, which I'd avoided (the cop's silly name?) but is pretty good except for fairly atrocious soundtrack music. I'm amused by the Labour youth club set decorations in County Durham 1964: peace signs, Stones & Who posters...and Che Guevara? Seems a tad much.
I rather enjoyed my publisher trying to read from his new novel this evening at Winnipeg's Wild Wonderful Words while Canada's longest train trundled along behind him.
It would be so good if Keri Russell (The Diplomat) and Matthew Rhys (esp his nom for Widow's Bay, but also The Beast in Me) each took an Emmy back to the home they share as a couple. #emmys2026
My first WOW reading experience since...well, Hamnet. I bought this somewhat ironically or whimsically to get me through a heatwave. And then didn't even notice my own heatwave as I was propelled through this story, which I couldn't put down. #booksky
Harriet the Spy location or the dumb waiter in my brother's cool apartment in Toronto?
Eastern Canada culture vacation tip: after you bugger up your knee by falling in a Montreal hole, be sure to ice your knee in Stratford motel before going to see The Tempest & when the ice on your knee is 3/4 melted (takes approx 90 seconds) pour into one of the cute little motel glasses and serve
not even an overheated Portuguese or Croatian footballer could enjoy my brother's icy tiled foyer floor more than I am enjoying it right now after a train trip through Quebec and Ontario and if the VIA a/c was functioning it's news to me
Montreal in summer is one nonstop festival after another and you swim slowly in air that's actually hot water from gig to gig and in concerts not only are you allowed to take drinks to your auditorium seat you are practically required to
At the Montreal Jazz Festival for Melody Gardot, here with South Africa's Thanda Choir. She's more unassuming than I expected, prowling the stage to listen to the other musicians. Her supple, delicate early voice is still beautifully present, but there's a lot more power as she gets older. Amazing.
this is me. soon after this smug mugshot I was looking at my Montreal Jazz Festival ticket, stepped in a hole in the sidewalk & went down hard, almost wiping out a couple of Father John Misty fans. being Canadian, they apologized to me for me crashing into them. result: embarrassment & scraped knee.
New to Father John Misty? He's a bit like if Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Bob Dylan had a baby, but the baby sounded and looked far prettier than any of them.
I could have bought tickets to see Father John Misty at the Winnipeg Folk Festival but I like being indoors with chairs and without mosquitoes, so I'm doing Montreal Jazz Festival. He's not exactly either genre, but there isn't a Charming Ironic Troubadour Festival. I don't think.
once again taking credit for the beauty of my garden although I've done pretty much nothing to deserve it
Bittersweet to hear today that my brother-in-law John Foster has received the Order of Canada posthumously. He died this spring just short of his 84th birthday, beloved by too many to count. For me, he was the man with a startling laugh who taught me to swim in Saskatchewan's Last Mountain Lake.
Ann Blyth (here in a star turn in 1945 in Mildred Pierce): 1928-2026. Astonishing.
had a dental appointment today and decided best way to handle the hour was to lie back and think of Tom Hardy
examples of Holroyd's prose: "Augustus had by now attracted a great deal of steam to himself" "Great physical beauty and fragrant simplicity were what exercised his spirit to the utmost, for behind these qualities seemed to lurk the ultimate secret, the wonder of life" Chew on that, LLM robots
today's petty peeve involves reading about great beauties, flamboyant beauties, etc. & then there are no or very few images so I can decide for myself (I'm reading, with increasing frustration, Michael Holroyd's wildly opinionated biography of Augustus John) (see also the Wiki page for Eve Fleming)
working on new author photo will keep at it best of the bunch so far as the rest appear to present me as just having had a stroke
Congrats to @doradueck.bsky.social for topping this week's @mcnallyrobinson.com list. (I'd like to think my event hosting helped, but I am pretty sure it's that people like Dora's writing.)
