Soil indicators play a crucial role in assessing soil performance and guiding sustainable land management practices by providing insights into soil health and quality. This study conducted by a team from Federation University Australia examined Australian farmers' knowledge of fixed soil properties, the types of chemical, physical, biological and observational indicators used, and the reasons for their choice of indicators. Observational assessments, including paddock walks and plant growth, were the most frequently used indicators. Farmers primarily chose indicators based on their relevance to production decisions and ease of assessment, with grain farmers more likely to follow agronomist recommendations and select indicators suited to their enterprise.

This study from Teagasc and University College Dublin compared two soil organic carbon (SOC) stock assessment methods, Equivalent Soil Mass (ESM) and Fixed Depth (FD), using 1184 soil samples spatially distributed in the southeast of Ireland. A linear regression model incorporating stoniness and depth was developed to improve ESM-based estimations. Results indicate that ESM, when adjusted for these factors, provides a reliable estimate of SOC stocks and can substitute FD under most conditions. Given its ease of implementation compared to FD and its ability to capture landscape variability, ESM is recommended for large-scale SOC monitoring. However, a hybrid approach may be needed in soils with extreme stoniness. These findings support integrating ESM into national carbon monitoring frameworks to enhance the accuracy of national SOC inventories.
