This is a statistic which is commonly cited in a way that misrepresents causality.

Reality check- Owning a gun does not make you want to kill yourself. In the circumstances where someone wants to kill themself, a gun is a highly effective method of doing so. So, successful suicides often use guns.

The rate of suicide attempts among gun owners and non gun owners is consistent. This means that, statistically speaking, there is no increased risk of attempting suicide due to gun ownership.

The increased risk is of succeeding in the attempt. This means the risk is conditional.

In other words, buying a gun to defend yourself does not meaningfully increase your risk of attempting suicide. Arguing against gun ownership for self defense by citing suicide statistics is a misrepresentation used to position being anti-gun as morally and ethically beyond reproach.

Very weird that the New York Times here mentions how birthright citizenship is found in "many countries in Central and South America" but neglects to mention the biggest and most obvious Northern examples... Canada and Mexico

In the coming weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in a landmark case through which the White House has sought to end the 157-year-old legal standard of birthright citizenship.

When President Trump talks about this issue, he calls America “STUPID” for automatically granting citizenship to U.S.-born children of immigrants. The policy does stand out for its permissiveness: Although many countries in Central and South America have similar laws, most nations require that at least one parent be a citizen for a child to qualify.

This dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party has resulted in a rejection of several establishment candidates in primary elections over the last year. Progressive candidates like Graham Platner in Maine and Mr. Mamdani in New York were once seen as operating on the fringes of the party, and are now being discussed, however fancifully, as the future of the Democratic Party.
