I’ve made it a priority to ride @metrolosangeles.bsky.social more— but I know I don’t have the same experience as people who rely on our system everyday. That’s why I’m bringing a proposal next week for Metro to add a seat for a rider to the board. The Metro board needs a Metro rider.

Riders haven’t been able to use the TAP readers on this ride— I just talked with the bus operator, who said this isn’t the first time she’s seen this issue. I’m going to bring this back to @metrolosangeles.bsky.social to make sure our technology is reliably working for riders.

You can’t beat a summer night at the Hollywood Bowl—and tonight I partnered w/ LA Phil to bring 75 promotoras from SELA to enjoy the “Salsa Spectacular” performance and a picnic. Promotoras do incredible work, and I’m glad we could share this experience as a small token of gratitude.

Third spaces are important for everyone, but especially for communities like the LGBTQ+ community— and we need to be more intentional about creating these safe spaces. Today I'm joining @hildasolis.bsky.social to call for a plan to create LGBTQ+ third spaces across LA County.

I especially want to thank our 4th District recipients, Chicxs Rockerxs SELA & the Long Beach Youth Chorus. Both groups are creating community through music and expanding horizons for our youth. This is important work— and I’m grateful for your commitment to the next generation.

Dr. Noguchi became famous for the high-profile autopsies he performed on celebrities from Marilyn Monroe, to RFK, to Natalie Wood. It is a fascinating story about fame and power and discrimination – and I am honored to be a small part of the documentary.

Last night was a little out of the ordinary for me. I sat on a panel moderated by @jonlovett.bsky.social with Director Ben Hethcoat to talk about Ben’s new documentary “Coroner to the Stars.” It is about the life and complicated legacy of LA County’s longtime coroner Dr. Thomas Noguchi.

This $40 million, state-of-the-art aquatic center is an investment in this community, and I’m proud to be able to contribute $10 million of that total budget. Considering how much this center will do for the people of Pico Rivera, I think it’s worth every penny.

What a great day for Pico Rivera! Today we broke ground on the Smith Park Aquatic Center— a special place where kids will learn to swim and where people of all ages will come to exercise, join swim teams, play water polo, and cool off on a hot day.

Heads up, San Pedro: Film crews will be working at the former courthouse property on Thursday and Friday. The setup will involve set lighting and a crane—and it will be cleaned up by Saturday. This is not related to any development or construction for the site.

Today we welcomed U.S. Army veteran Arturo Garcia-Ayala to lead us in the Pledge. Arturo served our nation from 2002-2009 and now serves the San Pedro community as a photographer, an ambassador for the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, and Veterans' Liaison for the Korean Bell of Friendship.

92 years ago, police opened fire on striking port workers, killing two and injuring hundreds. Despite the violence, the strike persisted and led to the creation of the ILWU. Today I stand with our longshore workers as they honor those sacrifices and commemorate Bloody Thursday.

As we mark America's 250th anniversary, I'm choosing to celebrate what our founding fathers fought for: A nation where we're all created equal, and we all have the right to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness. Let's continue our fight for justice for all. Happy 4th of July!

July is Disability Pride Month—and I am joining the City of Long Beach today to begin the month by raising the Disability Pride Flag. This flag tells a powerful story—with every color, it recognizes the incredible diversity within the disability community

And of course, LA County's very own Assessor Jeff Prang received the Political Icon Award—an honor that couldn't be more well-deserved. As one of the longest-serving openly gay elected officials in the country, he has paved the way for so many others. Congratulations, Jeff!

From their Older Adult Services program, to mental health support, to career counseling—the LGBTQ+ Center Long Beach does incredible work for their community, and this weekend I was proud to join and support them at their 11th Annual Black & White Gala.
