Another trail camera video: FIVE raccoons. I’m pretty sure it’s a mama raccoon (on the left) and her four babies (on the right). 🦝🦝🦝🦝🦝
This is what a gray fox looks like–they’re smaller than coyotes, they have a black stripe running down the full length of their tail, some orange fur, and the face looks different.
OMG y’all. The trail camera got video of a coyote. It was only a matter of time, really. But I’ve had a trail camera since mid-April and this is the first time it’s gotten video of a coyote. It’s definitely not a fox (I see foxes all the time). You can hear a squirrel barking at it from above.
The bird watching from my home office window continues. Sometimes I even see a hummingbird!
This is why I shoo the squirrels off the feeder. They’re cute little boogers but you don’t usually get a cute-critter video, you just get video of the back end of a squirrel. And they eat all of the seeds too. Anyway this is a rock squirrel–they have darker fur than the tree squirrels.
Look! A pair of Lesser Goldfinches on the bird feeder (and a Black-Crested Titmouse in the tree). I’ve noticed that the goldfinches like to eat the seeds on my basil plants, too.
I wasn’t sure if I’d bother with it this year but why not at least have a festive cocktail so I prepped the layers for a red white & blue margarita to have later tonight. Here’s a photo of a previous festive July 4th margarita. The red layer is raspberry, white is coconut, blue is blue curaçao. 🎉
Add Eastern Cottontail (rabbit) to the list of critters I’ve seen near my house. 🐇
There are four different kinds of birds in this video from the bird feeder: a Carolina Chickadee (black cap) on the feeder, a male Northern Cardinal (red) hanging out in the tree, a Black-Crested Titmouse (gray with black crest) shows up in the tree, and a Carolina Wren (brown) gets on the feeder. ❤️
I have a cute little glass jar filled with mixed nuts on the countertop, to encourage multi-plant snacking. #30PlantsAWeek
I got video of a Blue-grey Gnatcatcher! They’re teeny little booboos and during breeding season, the males have crazy eyebrows. 🤨 It was in the tree right outside my home office window. I can bird watch from my desk! ❤️
Multiple “Imminent Threat” alerts due to flash flooding so I guess I will stay home today (I was going to stay home anyway). ⛈️
Dinner tonight is pretty easy. Greek pork tenderloin, tzatziki, store-bought pitas & red pepper hummus, garlic-butter green beans. The hardest parts were making the tzatziki and the marinade for the pork, but both are easy to make. Marinade recipe is from America’s Test Kitchen (screenshot below).
Wow, my phone says I got a perfect sleep score. First time that’s happened. Yaaay I slept well. Apparently.
New trail camera footage just dropped. Opossum! (Video is cropped.) Also got footage of raccoons, grey foxes, and a ringtail.
We went on a Mother’s Day hike on a little hiking trail in town and it’s very pretty there, and there were lots of birds singing, and there’s even a waterfall.
My bird feeder with the camera in it has been up for a couple of weeks now and I mostly only get cardinals (and sometimes a squirrel, the little fucker) but the cardinals are really cute because they’re couples and the males will often chirp chirp and then feed seeds to their little lady friends.
Husband got me one of those Birdbuddy bird feeders for Christmas and I finally set it up the day before yesterday, and I’ve already had visits from three kinds of birds: Northern Cardinals (a male and a female), a Black-Capped Chickadee, and a Black-Crested Titmouse. Eeee! #birdies

I love soup so I searched for high protein soup recipes, and all of the results were just normal soups that have meat and/or beans. Anyway, sometime soon I’m going to make 15-bean soup with ham in it and not only will it have lots of protein, it’ll also count as at least 15 different plants. Woo! 🍲
