A Field Study on Matching with Network Externalities†

We study the effects of network externalities within a protocol for
matching faculty to offices in a new building. Using web and survey data on faculty’s attributes and choices, we identify the different
layers of the social network: institutional affiliation, coauthorships,
and friendships. We quantify the effects of network externalities on
choices and outcomes, disentangle the layers of the networks, and
quantify their relative influence. Finally, we assess the protocol used
from a welfare perspective. Our study suggests the importance and
feasibility of accounting for network externalities in assignment
problems and evaluates techniques that can be employed to this end.

$A Decade of Signaling at the AEA, What have we learned? with M. Niederle and A. E. Roth We study the use of the preference signalling mechanism provided by the American Economic Association. The use of the signals has grown steadily over the past decade, with a growing fraction of signals sent to non-academic jobs. However, some signals seemingly go to waste, as many students signal highly ranked institutions which likely don't pay attention to the signals they receive. We show that students who signal to institutions ranked higher than their PhD granting institutions are less likely to be hired by the institution to which they signaled. Institutions also vary by the number of signals they receive; most receive no more than two signals, while more than 18% of signals are sent to institutions that receive more than 20 signals. We also designed surveys whose responses were collected by the AEA: Among responding institutions, more than 20% indicate they interviewed a candidate who signaled them, and whom they otherwise wouldn't have interviewed.$

Tang poetry and yuri manga in one math profile, it doesn't get better than that.

Take the poem he’s just pulled up on his computer screen: a dense forest of Chinese characters corralled into eight lines of equal length — a perfect, symmetric block of text. Written in the ninth century by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin, as China teetered on the brink of civil war, “The Brocade Zither” is famous for its ambiguity. “Many people have tried to explain it,” Deng said. “But I think this is something that’s not explainable.” A single word might allude to an ancient battle or a classic fairy tale; a simple phrase might have scores of diverging interpretations.

“My personal favorite of all time,” Deng said — an example of a highly structured form of Chinese poetry that literally translates to “regulated verse.” It must satisfy all sorts of rules: parallel constructions and contrasting images, lilting tonal patterns and strict rhyme schemes. “These patterns are part of the beauty,” Deng said. “But they’re also something that restricts your expression. The fact that you can still say so many things under this restriction is another level of beauty.”

For comfort, Deng turned to manga. “I remember him at Courant. He was always holding a manga,” said Jalal Shatah(opens a new tab), a professor there who formerly chaired the math department. Deng particularly liked stories about deep friendship and romance and found himself drawn to a genre known as yuri, which focuses on those kinds of relationships between women — stories that “feel nice and warm and beautiful,” as he put it. They helped him be kinder to himself, “more comfortable with life.”

Abstract
The Big Decisions in our lives, having a child, getting married, getting educated, etc.
are transformative decisions that are hard to make. As a result, people often seek advice
before making them. However, since people tend to live in homophilous social networks
the advice received from their friends and neighbors may simply reinforce the decisions
that people like them are already making. We investigate whether the advice offered by
ChatGPT for such decisions can be useful in broadening the advice people receive and
how such advice varies as we change the prompted socioeconomic backgrounds of the
advisee and advisor. We find that advice tends to be confirmatory for low-income groups,
in that it reinforces their established choices, while being dis-confirming for high-income
groups, where it prompts reconsideration. Furthermore, even when suggesting the
same choice, ChatGPT justifies that choice differently depending on who it is talking
to. These findings suggest that AI-generated advice may differentially shape life’s Big
Decisions across social strata.

In the mid-1990s, I spent many long nights with Georg Weizsäcker playing a football manager game. We became mildly obsessed.

Eventually we won everything: the league, the cup, and the European Cup.

The program crashed.

Apparently, the developers hadn’t anticipated that someone might actually complete the full set. That was the end of our managerial careers.

I still have very fond memories of those nights.

So, thirty years later, I decided to build a tiny football manager game of my own. It’s called Kicktext, and it’s dedicated to Georg.

It’s much simpler than today’s management games, and even simpler than the one we played back then. But building a successful club is still quite tricky. At least that’s what I found.
