So the Bureau of Land Management or their predecessor, basically owed the government three hundred million dollars for this because no funds were appropriated, and that three hundred million dollars was accruing interest to the point where I think in nineteen ninety six, Newt Gingrich got into power and it was time to start talking about privatizing things. And Christopher Cox went to the House floor and basically said, you know, do you know the government, this dumb government has one point four billion dollars of party balloon debt. And a bill was quickly passed and you know, signed by Clinton, and we decided to sell the whole thing off. The original plan, I believe, was to sell it off in equal parts over thirty years for exactly one point four billion, with no regard to the market, just to pay off the government so called party balloon debt. And the physics community was up in arms about this. But you know, they don't have that many senators.

Twenty seven years ago [now thirty-seven], students who had occupied a square to protest their corrupt government and its poor policies came under military assault by the government and were forced to shut down the movement and escape for their lives. We don’t know how many hundreds were killed and how many hundreds more were wounded, but all protest was halted and the demonstrators were pursued and punished to keep order over the next days and years.

Standing by the correctness of the violent crackdown became an imperative of the government in the decades since, and there is still no possibility of accountability. The hardliners most blamed stayed in power for many more years and live on in peaceful retirement. In time, the younger generation has lost its understanding of what happened that day, for they can benefit from no witness but crafted tales of decisive government action saving the nation from disorder on that fateful day.

I don’t know the history well and am not a good person to write about it. But somehow this history is lost on DK, and I thought one small comment with a sober accounting is the least that I could contribute.

This type of message is very popular here! It's not self-deprecating. It shifts blame for the worst outrages we are seeing from Trump's admin and its goons away from the bad actors and towards Dem Senators (no Rs were gassed) and even a great, young one, who happens to be Asian

Bouie is very good, as always, here. The US media structure has hurt Dems and boosted Rs for a decade now, when emailz was the rage. But most of the public thought the media leaned Dem. Much of the damage was because the public mistakenly trusted media and accepted bad faith arguments as legit.

What in the world? How many felons is the Trump Bureau of Prisons silently letting out? Which also lets them hide from service of legal process. Is it only the ones with connections to Russian intelligence, or does it go beyond that?
