Bonus photos. My wife looking like she could be ambushed by Ewoks at any moment. The Hoh River at a very low level, a downed tree I think looks like a whale staring at me, and the twilight of the Tree of Life on Klaloch Beadh.

Trail through a small clearing in the forest with wall to wall chest high Western sword ferns, woman at the bottom right corner looking to the left.

Wide Hoh River bank with low water level and lots of exposed river rock. Looking towards the far bank with low bright green trees, taller medium green evergreens behind and a probably several hundred foot peaked tree covered hill that might be considered a mountain in less Brobdingnagian lands.

Downed Western Hemlock (I think) with much of the outer bark stripped off and a knot in the wood that I think looks like a whale looking at you

Several people gathered on Klaloch Beach to wonder at and pay respect to the Tree of Life, a centuries old Sitka Spruce perched atop a tall oceanside bluff. Unlike its nearby cousins it doesn’t thrust straight into the sky, but looks like a gnarled bonsai tree has been hit with a sci-fi magnifying beam. Its exposed roots straddle a 20 or 30 foot gap in the bluff, but the base of the tree has mostly sunken into the grotto below and is in grave danger of complete collapse.

A few photos from a trip to the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park a couple weeks ago. Photos (at least mine) can’t really capture the full scale. Wild you can drive 100 miles from Seattle and get this or go the other direction and find something like the massive canyons of the desert SW.

Looking up towards bright blue sky into the canopy of 200 foot tall western hemlock and Sitka spruce trees, the tree in the center doesn’t even branch out for at least 100 feet from the ground.

Gnarled big leaf maple branch cuts horizontally across the forest background with feet of moss copiously dangling from it like an old man’s beard

Massive blown down tree that is now a nurse log. 6’2” me for size reference standing awkwardly (what do I do with my arms?) in front of the exposed shallow root ball more than twice my height. The bottom 20 feet of a row of trees growing from the top of the roots stretches well past the image frame into the sky

Picture taken standing next to the roots from the last picture and looking up. Some of the roots don’t belong to the old tree, but are roots from the trees growing at the top of the downed tree stretching a dozen feet down to the ground. The new trees already stretch high into the sky with moss covered branches

Gotta zoom in and the photo doesn’t quite capture what I saw with the naked eye, but outer rainbow, inner rainbow, and then there were about 4 mini rainbows attached to the inside of the inner bow.

Looking out over neighboring houses and trees to arcs of rainbow, a faint outer rainbow, a gap, and a brighter inner rainbow with a wispy succession of faint narrower rainbows directly inside it.

TIL Taco Bell is named after its founder, Mr. Bell. My eyes rolled so hard at him being credited with inventing the idea of selling hard shell tacos I didn’t blink when I misread it as saying he commissioned a *flying* contraption from a man who made chicken coops. It seemed more plausible to me.

Couldn't think what Taco Bell this would be and checked street view. Oh yeah! I think this was actually the first Taco Bell I ever went to, when tacos were a nickel and there were only like 3 menu items. Surprised this didn't get landmark status from rich neighbors that don't want more apartments

Former 70s-vintage faux-Mission tile-roofed brick Taco Bell with no signage that has been painted gray. The arch entryway and bell-shaped false front roof remain, the matching arch windows long since bricked in. It fronts a residential street with stairs leading up to it and terraced landscape with brick retaining wall and a parking strip tree in front of it.

I can definitely see the art/status symbol argument. When I got my first smartphone with an oled screen (tool and status symbol) my first thought was “this calls for obsidian hand axe wallpaper.” That red axe looks pretty hot though 🧐
