In Oslo, Norway a secret "Future Library" is being quietly collected, not to be revealed for 100 years. Every year a writer contributes a story. They are stored in these glass drawers. In 2114, they will published in an anthology. A library built for readers the creators will never meet.

The Silent Room in Oslo's main public library. The stories are sealed in these glass drawers, only to be opened in 2114, when they'll be collected in an anthology. A grove of trees was planted when the project began. It will be harvested and used to make the paper the anthology is printed on.

Image of what is called the Silent Room. It is an irregularly shaped oval with layers of blonde birch wood stacked upon one another reminiscent of tree rings. Interspersed amongst the layers of thin rectangles of light, these are glass drawers where the manuscripts are kept. What an honor it would be to be included in this anthology.

That's a good question! I found this picture of one of the books open. It looks like a roll of parchment is tucked into the spine.

A tree library book open. It is a little box with pine cones, slivers of branches, lichen, leaves and other tree detritus in each side. The spine has a little box where a rolled up parchment with spidery handwriting is tucked.

🌳 The Tree Library in Sweden is a 217-volume collection of wooden books. 📖 Each volume is dedicated to a different tree species and bound in that tree's own bark. Its pages feature the tree's leaves, mosses, lichens, and other natural materials. A very cool way to document nature.

You can tell a good American diner not by the decor-really the more slapdash the better-but by the groups of old men. You know the type: grizzled, wearing military Veteran caps, laughing, reminiscing, wiping damp eyes with wrinkled hands. They serve more than coffee. They serve a feeling of home.

There are some images that just hit you hard. Richard Lasher took this photo of Mount St. Helens erupting in 1980. There's a peaceful beauty to his surroundings and yet that wall of destruction is rushing forward. It's anxiety personified. Description of the events in the alt text.

Richard "Dick" Lasher had spent a week photographing Mount St. Helen. He'd planned to wake up early to head to the mountain, but ended up sleeping in.
Later, he would claim that extra sleep saved his life. He made it only halfway up the mountain when it erupted. Lasher began to turn his Pinto around, when he stopped to grab the photo seen here.

In it you see his red pinto parked diagonally across a dirt road, a motorcycle hooked to the back. On the left of the road is a steep forest covered mountain, to the right a thick clump of pine trees. Ahead the road cuts a V into the forest revealing Mount St. Helen grey and white in the distance, a towering cloud of ash swirling up blotting out the sky.

Lasher managed to turn the pinto around, racing down the mountain as the ash cloud rushed toward him at speeds of up to 400 mph. It enveloped his car, the engine sputtering and coughing until it finally died. Lasher unhooked the motorcycle finding the escape had bent the front wheel. He climbed on it and somehow made it out.

Weird Fact Alert! The max # of times a piece of paper has been folded in half is 13. It took 54,000 feet of toilet paper & an 825-foot long hallway at MIT. The reasons? Thickness doubles with every fold, eventually the paper is taller than long/creases break from tension. 13 folds=8,192 layers.

MIT students standing with their record breaking toilet paper folded 13 times. They did not get the Guinness Book of World Records certificate because the paper could not stand on its own. That record is held by a high school student in California for a 12-fold paper using a 4,000 foot piece of tissue paper.
