Marking 31st anniversary of the #SrebrenicaGenocide, we remember all the victims of this mass killing of thousands and their families. With the current backdrop of global bloodshed and conflict, we must work for #peace, stand against hate and say #NeverAgain.
Advice surgeries are a crucial part of my job as an MP and I held two more on Friday, assisting lots of #Slough constituents. Whether you've seen me multiple times or never been before, my team and I are here to help you with your problems and concerns.
Alpha Scientific does crucial work, especially on #environmental and #water #testing to enable people’s safety. Pleasure visiting their offices to meet the team, learn more about it all and discuss issues faced by this local #Slough-based #business.
#Defence Investment Plan should have charted clear course to agreed 3.5% of GDP spend on defence, but even 3% isn't in sight! Given #DonaldTrump warnings and reported #Russian plot, at the #NATO summit, #PrimeMinister should reassure allies and clarify our #investment pathway.
Good to share views with the Senior Strategic Leadership Programme - a cohort from over 30 countries amongst our allies - once more this year also. After my speech, intriguing and thoughtful questions from them covering #scrutiny, #governance and #accountability.
Engaging with trade #unions to get perspective of working people is important part of my role. @unison.org.uk local #government event shone a light on current pressures facing #councils, longstanding impact of underfunding, #devolution and wider local government reorganisation.
The raised #threats we face demand that the #government levels with the public to make them fully aware — via a national conversation, led by the #PrimeMinister. We obviously need to increase #investment in our #security, but the Ministry of #Defence must ensure value for money.
Lovely evening addressing #Surrey #Labour members in #Guildford and answering their questions on national #politics, defence and more. Important for likes of me to travel to areas not represented by Labour, so members feel empowered with support and access to MPs in Westminster.
Glad we now have a #Defence Investment Plan, which is backed by Treasury and scalable, but unfortunately it is not enough and it’s lacking in detail. To meet the moment given the raised threat level, we need an increase in #investment and it needs to be front-loaded.
Grateful to Berkeley Group Land and Development Director and her team for discussing in detail plans for their #Slough investments, particularly Queensmere and Observatory shopping centres on the High Street. Crucial for our town’s progress that these are effectively delivered.
Good to meet Budi Djiwandono MP, Chair of #Indonesia-#UK Parliamentary Friendship Group, Deputy Head of Defence, Foreign Affairs and Intelligence Committee, and a Parliamentary party leader. Valuable discussions with him and others on strengthening British-Indonesian ties.🇬🇧🇮🇩
With #NationalLorryWeek recently, it was an opportune time to catch up with the Road Haulage Association, #HGV lorry drivers and others in the sector keeping our local #communities and the wider #economy moving. We need to back Britain's #drivers.
Good we now have a funded and scalable #Defence Investment Plan backed by Treasury. But it’s lacking in detail and doesn’t outline operational risks for areas being cut. Crucially we need clear pathway to reach 3% GDP spend on defence by 2030 and commit to build more in the UK.
Honour to give keynote address at The @thespectator1828.bsky.social #NationalSecurity summit in #London. As I said, in increasingly volatile and tense times, we must #invest in our #defence and engage with the world as it is — only then can we shape it into the world we want it to be.
As Labour Friends of the Forces convened us to celebrate #ArmedForcesDay, thanked them in my speech for their pivotal work connecting #Labour with our amazing #ArmedForces community, as well as highlighting need to strengthen our forces at this key inflection point for #defence and #security.
To show #support for our #ArmedForces community and celebrate our #service personnel, there was a poignant Armed Forces Week flag raising ceremony in #Parliament. Our brave military men and women often work around the clock to keep us safe - I thank them for their dedication.
Huge unseen cost of #service falls upon #ArmedForces families. Indebted to all who sacrificed their #life for our nation, but heartening to hear of work of Beyond The Wire, ASF and others supporting grieving families, as we launched the UK’s first Armed Forces Bereavement Hub.
Measures to increase the flexibility of our reserve forces enhances #GreatBritain’s #defence readiness and positions us to respond to aggressors. The #ArmedForces Bill isn't perfect, but it will make a positive difference to our #service personnel and their families.
Fighting threats from abroad is vital, but so is fighting #discrimination and #injustice at home. The #Defence Committee repeatedly hears testimony from our service #women and others about the mistreatment they face, so it’s good to see that as a focus for the #ArmedForces Bill.
Extending the #ArmedForces Covenant to new policy areas and devolved administrations, as well as improved #Legal Duty guidance, is something the #Defence Committee has long-called for. The Armed Forces Bill must deliver positive change for our armed forces #community.
Henry Nowak's family warned us that his murder should not be used to divide communities. Those who choose to disregard this and politicise people’s pain do a disservice to the wishes of the grieving Nowak family and politics more widely - we must do better!
