infuriating: any search in the kindle store for any history topic is flooded with slop imprints selling cheap slop. it's so depressing. i now have to research every imprint, though some of them are obvious. even if they're not slop, original pub dates are obscured and often "new" books are outdated.

the second result is a book called "the akkadians" by elliot rowan, part of a 42-book series called "forgotten civilizations". no imprint is given in the results, but the book's page details say it is published by "sabie house". google searches for elliot rowan in combination with forgotten civilizations and sabie house returns only amazon results. this does not appear to be a real publishing imprint, and elliot rowan might not be a real person either. or maybe he's just selling slop for a quick buck. the price is $6.99.

In English, the phrase rule of thumb refers to an approximate method for doing something, based on practical experience rather than theory. This usage of the phrase can be traced back to the 17th century and has been associated with various trades where quantities were measured by comparison to the width or length of a thumb.

A modern folk etymology holds that the phrase is derived from the maximum width of a stick allowed for wife-beating under English common law, but no such law ever existed. This belief may have originated in a rumored statement by 18th-century judge Sir Francis Buller that a man may beat his wife with a stick no wider than his thumb. Despite there being no record that Buller ever said this, the rumor produced numerous jokes and satirical cartoons at his expense, with Buller being ridiculed as "Judge Thumb".

English jurist Sir William Blackstone wrote in his Commentaries on the Laws of England of an "old law" that once allowed "moderate" beatings by husbands, but he did not mention thumbs or any specific implements. Wife-beating has been officially outlawed for centuries in England and the United States, but continued in practice; several 19th-century American court rulings referred to an "ancient doctrine" that the judges believed had allowed husbands to physically punish their wives using implements no thicker than their thumbs.

The phrase rule of thumb first became associated with domestic abuse in the 1970s, after which the spurious legal definition was cited as factual in a number of law journals; the United States Commission on Civil Rights published a report on domestic abuse titled "Under the Rule of Thumb" in 1982. Republicans are entering the 2026 midterms with a 217-212 majority in the House, with five seats currently vacant and one independent. All 435 seats are up for election, but with maps continuing to shift because of redistricting, the Cook Political Report rates only 18 districts as tossups and another 20 as leaning toward one party. To retake the majority, Democrats would most likely need to hold all of their solid and likely seats, sweep those leaning their way, and flip 13 of the 18 tossups — a narrow but possible path given that the party out of power typically gains ground in the midterms.

Text notes: Mbappé the E is rendered with a diacritic, in this case an accent above the letter, a tick that goes up and to the right. Dūappé has the same diacritic on the ending E, but the U has a diacritic that is a straight horizontal mark just above the letter. Shubidubādūappé has the continuing use of the diacritic on the final e, plus horizontal marks above the A and the U at the sequence A-D-U. This is a reference to the 1997 song "MMMBop" by Hansen, a musical group of three brothers with long blond hair. "MMMBop" was near-ubiquitously known in the US in the years just after its release as a running joke about kid shit and annoying earworms. It is also pronounced very similar to the correct pronunciation of the beginning of Mbappé.

i found the article and it's just clickbait. the mom is fine with it. she just had a boomer moment. also the daughter is not really gay; she seems to be bi or perhaps demi and her main issue with het relationships is the power dynamics.

This is the New Joule Order (NJO): the era in which the security premium becomes the dominant force in energy markets. Electrification is the purchase of optionality — an electron can be sourced from oil, gas, coal, sun, wind or nuclear, while the combustion engine is married to a single fuel that must transit someone else's chokepoint. China has been building toward it since the 1990s. The West is still debating it — and the gap is now measured not in conference emissions pledges but in barrels per day, inventory levels, and the declining usable capacity of strategic reserves.

What looks like demand destruction is the New Joule Order being exercised in real time. China is exercising the real optionality for which they invested. At elevated prices — Chinese retail fuel prices jumped roughly 30% when the conflict began — price-driven suppression adds 0.5 to 0.7 mb/d of reduction. During the five-day May Day holiday, EV charging on highways surged 55.6% year-on-year, with nearly a quarter of cars on Chinese highways electric — a 33% increase. Chinese consumers faced with higher gasoline prices are charging rather than filling up, switching fuels on a dime because the infrastructure already exists. Industrial switching to coal-fired generation adds another 0.3 to 0.5 million barrels per day (b/d) of displacement; thermal generation is up 160%.

on the subject of little things that slip past a lot of people and eventually become memes: this one would reach meme status if we had an english adaptation of neko majin. only nerds recognized neko majin when dragon ball super came out.

majin boo is sitting on a pink couch in mr. satan's parlor with piles of empty ice cream containers on an unseen table in front of him. he has a picture book with a drawing of neko majin, which basically means cat genie, holding a fishing pole and riding on the back of a swimming tortoise. the water has a couple of fish in it, or maybe they are flying fish; i don't know. neko majin is a gag comic by akira toriyama that is set in some version of the dragon ball world, where majin boo resides. neko majin looks a lot like majin boo, but neko is catman-shaped and blue, while boo is bubblegum pink and doesn't resemble any real creature aside from the vaguely human bipedal presentation. "boo" is a reference to bibbidi bobbidi boo, a disney cinderella song. bobbidi is boo's magicial master, and bibbidi was his father and the person to unleash boo the first time.
